Very disappointing dinner on 10/18/25. I lived in Raleigh about ten years ago and this use to be a staple for southern BBQ, so I was excited to bring someone from out of the country to experience this. I was embarrassed for even making the reservation. The staff walks around like no one cares, food was cold & under-seasoned, it's overall just missing the spark it once had. We had to go to a different restaurant afterwards just to feel like the night wasn't a total bust. If you want good food The Pit is, unfortunately, not worth your time or money.
We were seated promptly and our server was at our table immediately. Our drinks and food arrived very quickly. Our meals were outstanding...we all shared because the portions are huge. The biscuits and hush puppies were also excellent.
One of the best meals I've ever had. We started with the Pit Sampler. Everything was amazing...especially the BBQ soul rolls! I had the Carolina Classic Combo (chopped BBQ and fried chicken) with brussel sprouts and sweet potato casserole. The other 2 in my party had the brisket. No one had any complaints and no room for dessert. 😊 Will definitely eat here again on a future visit!
The BBQ was alright. We got pulled pork, brisket, and chicken. But the service wasn't great. Our server looked like she didn't want to be there. She spilled my drink, said "oops," and just left. I had to ask her for napkins to wipe it up myself.
Great carrot cake as a birthday freebie ended a delicious meal. Best fried chicken I have ever had. Our waiter was knowledgeable and friendly. Cold draft beers from a nice selection. We were there about 3:00 so it was quiet but good tunes over the speakers. Brussel sprouts stood out also. Whole meal for two was under $70. Clearly an experienced joint well worth the visit.
The sides were the best. They were especially good. The hush puppies were the best I ever had. The brisket and other meat that I got tasted average, but the meat was tough and over cooked.
I loved the sweet potato casserole and Brunswick stew. I also enjoyed the pulled and chopped bbq. The potato salad was lacking in flavor and ingredients, but still edible. Service was great.
One of my favorites in Raleigh.
Gee gee is the best cook around will be back
Our waiter was very knowledgeable and personable! Large food portions and the food was delicious! I would definitely eat there again.

Moved from Texas so know brisket. Pit was good, a little fattier than I like. Really like lean. Moist and good flavor. Good sides. The pulled pork was shaved, like thick cut. Service was good.
The food and service were absolutely fantastic. The stuffed potato skins were just incredible. The chicken sandwich on brioche were moist and tender. The carrot cake alone was worth stopping in. Billy our server was friendly and attentive. He did a great job. The managers working were incredibly friendly. My wife and I really enjoyed ourselves.
The service was disappointing , refills were not happening and plates were just pilling up on our table. The food was good but not great. It was also closer to the end of the evening and it felt rushed as they cleaned around us.
Consistently great food and service! Been coming well over ten years. Born and raised in Eastern NC, and this is an excellent representation of the style of cooking. Don't remember our server's name but she was the best! I got the burnt end of some of the pulled pork this time. Didn't care for it, but it also wasn't worth sending back either. Everything else was excellent, as usual. My take on why i gave 4 stars for ambience and value: Ambience--nothing wrong with it at all, it's just not 5 star. I like a tad more privacy and a little less noise. Value--Relatively speaking, for a nice Raleigh dining experience, this is a good value. But to get a 5 star value, you have to go further east to some of the little diners and holes in the wall where you can get just as good or better food for half the price. Overall--this is still one of the best eats in Raleigh! And the collards are still some of the best ever.
I have been to the pit before - The food seems have changed - I know if they changed meat suppliers or chefs , but the food tasted different- The ribs were good , not dry , but they were bland The 1/2 bbq chicken tasted fine- We ordered 2 orders of brisket , one came out nice - the other looked like it was the bottom of the barrel- A little disappointing—
