I’ve been eating at Shelby Cafe my entire life. It was a favorite spot to meet mom and dad for lunch growing up. I visit every time I’m back in town. That may have ended today. I’ve been back in the area for a few weeks and have dined at the cafe two or three times. Service has declined significantly. I was ignored for a several minutes today. After ordering, I noticed others who ordered long after I did get their food. I kept waiting. Kept looking for my server. No where to be found. Was told they had to get more pimento cheese to make my sandwich. Food finally comes. Soup was cold. Again my server was MIA. After speaking to someone finally I was told my ticket was lost. That’s what took so long. So I was lied to on top of being ignored. There are much much better independent restaurants in this town to support. I kept going back to the cafe for the nostalgia. No longer. I don’t seem to be welcomed there anymore.

Stopped in for a late breakfast since its served all day! Some.of the best livermush around and their hotcakes are fluffy and delicious.
Our server Caitlin was very friendly and sweet as can be. Attentive and prompt with her service. We will be coming back here again because of her.
Very reasonable pricing as well. I do recommend!

My family of 5 drove from Lexington NC to eat here just to leave completely disappointed. We ordered 3 breakfast plates, a cowboy burger and a fried chicken sandwich. Let me start by saying I found a grey hair under my homestyle potatoes. I made the waitress aware and she addressed my concern and had my breakfast remade. My breakfast consisted of a cheese omelette, homestyle potatoes and a biscuit. The omelette was undercooked, the homestyle potatoes were hard & bland, the biscuit was not fresh & (super dry) on two breakfast plates. The third breakfast plate (French toast) was decent. The cowboy burger meat was overcooked, dry and hard to swallow. The fried chicken was horribly dry & tough! My son “mom I’m glad I added sauce otherwise it would’ve been impossible to tolerate”.I tasted both the burger and fried chicken (fiancé & son concerns) validated. Boy! What a disappointment! The French fries, soft drink and coffee were okay at best! The food being served at this location is mediocre. I’m not really understanding the good reviews because the food was trash! The place is outdated and needs a deep cleaning.The waitress was friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, we will not be coming back.
Update to address owner response: I have zero reasons to be dishonest in any of my reviews. I was so upset about the experience I just wanted to pay the bill and get out of this location. I never looked at the check to realize my meal was removed. But since you want to make it clear that you have viewed the cameras, I hope they have audio to capture how I was telling my husband to leave all that garbage behind. He didn’t want to be rude and decided to package and if you have outdoor cameras you will see how he tossed it in the garbage next to the traffic light. Once again we have absolutely no reason to be dishonest with anything, we took the drive to have a good family meal and our experience was far from that. I also hope your cameras recorded when my mother in law made me aware she also found a hair in her meal. She made it clear she felt sick and rushed to the bathroom (should be on camera). She has had an upset stomach since we left your establishment. If you’re going to accuse customers of lying please complete a full review of your indoor/outdoor cameras with audio to get a full picture. I never stated my son didn’t eat his meal; I made it clear on initial review he was glad he added sauce which helped with the dryness/toughness of the chicken. When I get served quality food I make sure to leave a deserving review. In this case your food didn’t meet quality expectations. The tip was strictly for waitress customer service!

It was horrible every time I ate here. The girls in the back were speaking about sexual experiences while in the kitchen. They were playing in each other's hair and did not wash hands afterwards. Then my 6 year old daughter witnessed two women in the kitchen kissing like come on this is a restaurant not a hotel room. I'm never going back it's almost as bad as taste T
And then come to find out Shelby Cafe was once a segregated restaurant that served African-Americans out of the back of the restaurant at one time and from a lot of people's stories about the place they were the last ones to accept African Americans as regular diners they do not even have any African-American servers even if they go in there and ask I sent my daughter in for a job and she signed up to waitress they only offered her a kitchen job with their history of racism I am not surprised
Came here two days in a row and us Being from out of state this place was very welcoming our waitress Beth Was entertaining, funny and spot on, service was great, food came out quickly and our breakfast was cooked to perfection i wish that all our food experiences during our travels were as good as the Shelby Cafe. We will definitely be back again while in the Shelby area. 5 🌟 and I highly recomend.
