Circa 1922 is absolutely the best restaurant we have found in the Wilmington area. We have been going there for the past 11 years! You could not ask for better service, better food, or a better atmosphere.
Classy, delicious, and highly recommend. Awesome experience.
Great atmosphere great service
Food was absolutely amazing, however the portions were small for how much you paid for them. It was also a beautiful restaurant and had great ambience. My only real gripe with this place was our server Amanda. She was very rude to us and ruined my wife and I last experience out till she gives birth. I don't know it it was a one off experience with this establishment or this is the norm but it is enough for us to never come back.

What the heck happened? I’ve been here twice before and had great meals in a great atmosphere with great service. Tonight the service and atmosphere did not disappoint but the food was… bad. I had the flounder with shrimp. The caper sauce was good but the seafood was probably frozen. It was very dry, overcooked and flavorless. Completely unacceptable for a restaurant with their reputation and prices.

My wife and I were looking for a memorable spot in downtown Wilmington for the last night of our visit. When I saw paella on the menu at Circa 1922, we made our decision.
I'm no chef, but I've had enough paella to recognize a subpar product. More on that later.
We started with a negroni for me and a French red for my wife. Both were spot on. Soon came a half dozen oysters with three sauce choices. Those briny delights were light and tasty. We wanted more, but we knew what was to come and settled for a proper portion.
The paella checked all of the boxes with solid gold! Tasty rice, clams, mussels, shrimp, scallops, and Spanish chorizo melded into a fantastic experience. I can only dream of preparing seafood this well. Frankly, I've never had more perfectly cooked scallops, and the smoky chorizo added flavor that only a unique outsider in the seafood party can do.
We ended with chocolate pot du creme served in espresso cups. The sizes were perfect for such a rich ending!
Amanda, our server, was a pro. She provided great knowledge of the wine list and answered all of our menu questions as if she designed the dishes herself.
I will gladly award five stars across the board, and I hope a return trip to Wilmington is in my future so I can stop by Circa 1922 again!

The ambiance is unmatched! The pianist is a beautiful touch in an otherwise loud restaurant. The decor is very chic and comfortable.
The food I was conflicted with the rating. I wanted so badly to give 5 stars because you can taste the flavors- they're bold and you can tell the dishes are well thought out. We started with the grilled octopus and potato pave. The pave was wonderfully crisp and delicate. It was overtop of a puree (I want to say it was a potato base). It was excellent- must try!! The grilled octopus let me down. One of the tentacles was charred. Other than the charring, the texture was beautiful in the thicker parts of the octopus.
The sauce that was paired was delicious, though...it did not go with the Octopus.
I ended up removing the octopus from the sauce and dipping it in the olive oil that came with the bread and then into the puree that came with the pave. In my opinion, if they placed the octopus over the puree with a sprinkle of smoked paprika, and a drizzle of olive oil- it would be a 10 star dish.
The table foccacia did not impress me. It was a great try to be different (much better than the prepackaged dinner rolls at most places). However, they were on the sweet side.. it was odd.
The paella was terrific! My only minor complaint was the undercooked peppers within the dish. Otherwise, the flavor was beautiful. It was more of a Barcelona style paella with chorizo. It was addictive and I kept coming back to it.
My hubby got the butcher steak with sunchoke gnocchi with mushrooms. The butcher steak was flawless (I wanted medium- ordered medium rare as we always do since restaurants tend to overcook- it came out medium, so just be mindful to order a little more rare than you'd actually like) The gnocchi was inventive and really really amazing. The mushrooms were hit or miss. Some were perfect and some were overcooked/charred. The flavor they imparted were great!
Lasty but not least, the bananas foster was a flavor bomb. It was incredible. The banana bread was soaked in a dark rum sauce and adorned with a scoop of gelato. There was an accompanying brulleed banana that paired nicely with the candied walnuts. It was scrumptious! There was a dollop of whipped cream and a few sliced strawberry and blackberries/blueberries as a garnish which just felt out of place. It wouldn't deter me from ordering again!
The service left something to be yearned for. It wasn't the servers fault, as it was busy.. I just felt that if the server was a little more warm and engaging, maybe talked to me about the specials or reccomended drinks/apps from the start, I may have left with less gripes- I think some fine tuning and this place would be marvelous. I am just now "wowed".

As a brown person I did feel welcomed to this restaurant at all!
They sat us right by the door
They clearly saw we were celebrating a special occasion
And we still didn’t get the nice smiley face that everyone else received!!!
The waiter did a terrible job and was acting like she didn’t want to be there serving and it was our fault that she has to work!
They gave me a drink with a worm in it
A five star restaurant and a worm in your drink!!!
They definitely need to work on their staff attitude and service quality and food check ups before they send them out!
Not a good experience for the money I spent
There are better places.
Do NOT RECOMMEND to PEOPLE OF COLOR.??

A delicious date night evening for our first night in Wilmington. The sangria was vibrant and strong! Starters, mains and dessert all were top tier. The music created a nice atmosphere, whilst the place was very busy there was no long waits and the staff were very attentive. Thanks for having us!
