Having traveled to Germany and lived in Chicago where I was able to enjoy phenomenal German restaurants like The Beghoff and Laschet’s Inn, I know good pork schnitzel when I get it. The German Cafe has some of the best I have ever had! Their German potato salad was also absolutely fantastic. I must add that finishing the whole meal off with their blackberry brandy was definitely the way to go. Experience it for yourself. You will not be disappointed!! Ohhh…. And the atmosphere is adorable too!

We stopped in for a late Sunday lunch at The German Café, located inside the Cotton Exchange in downtown Wilmington. The restaurant has a great historic ambiance—exposed brick walls, old-world décor, German flags, and vintage beer signs give it an authentic and cozy European vibe. We kicked things off with the baked pretzel, and it was excellent—crispy outside, soft inside, and served warm. The Sunday brunch/lunch menu is fairly limited, which was a bit of a letdown, as we were hoping to see more of the full dinner or weekday lunch offerings. Still, the dishes we tried were well-prepared and satisfying. Our table had the sausage platters, Lorraine quiche, turkey sandwich, and veal schnitzel—all solid choices with good flavors. While the menu was a bit restricted due to the day and time, the food and atmosphere were both strong. We’re already looking forward to coming back for dinner to try out more from the full menu.

Went for lunch during a girls trip and had a wonderful experience. The food was delicious and the staff was wonderful. Our waitress specifically was Emma. Will be back!

Cool old buildings. Nice wait staff. Food was German style but zero extra flare or effort. A plate of average food was delivered.

This has been one of our favorite places to visit while in Wilmington. German restaurants are rare in NC, and we need to help them succeed. Unfortunately, in our most recent visit we either caught them on a bad day or they have made a downward turn. Soggy schnitzel that was barely edible, a scrap of potato salad and pale vegs added to the plate. The beer was good. And we can still recommend the wurst plate. But we left grieving our old favorite restaurant. Hoping it was just a bad night, but we're not sure we'll be returning.

Empty place @ 11:30 am, was seated. Excited for some morning pastry. Two parties arrived after myself and both were helped to order. Server made eye contact with me before helping the other guests so she should have known I was ready. No explanation, never happened to me before in my life. Had to walk out, really disappointed. Will not be going back.
