I went here with my daughter after checking out the new Kaleideum downtown location. I would definitely recommend this place for kids - they have a good children's menu that is well-priced (I think it was about $7 for a combo). I had the fried chicken sandwich and it was excellent.Definitely looks like a dive so will give atmosphere 4 stars (it personally doesn't bother me but others might find it grungy).

Awesome place! Great food and very courteous service. If you like a casual atmosphere with reasonable prices, give it a try. We definitely will be back.

I took my 2 young children here yesterday for lunch. The food was homemade and delicious! The gentleman working was so kind and patient, even when my 2 year old wouldn’t stay in her seat (she was standing next to our table, not running around). We don’t visit Winston often, but we will definitely return the next time we’re in town!

What a nice surprise! I’m from Winston and have passed by this place for years. Today, I gave it a try. The rosemary chicken (Friday special) was outstanding! Two to three specials can be ordered cafeteria style, or you can order from the grill. The chicken I got was from the line. High sanitation grade too. Give this place a try. I’ll definitely be back.

Loved the concept of this place. You have the option to order from their menu. Everything is made fresh with real ingredients, or from their hot bar. This gives you the option to dine quickly if you're in a rush. The location downtown is great but unfortunately the road in front of Murphys is closed due to the construction or the new Kaleidum. (Fortunately the construction should be complete in the next few weeks). Because of this, I had a hard time finding parking. Rosemary chicken from the hot bar; I was genuinely surprised at how much flavor everything on the plate had! And I do mean everything. The rice, the chicken, the vegetables, and the greens. Amazing The grilled chicken club was ordered from the menu but prepared quickly and everything tasted fresh.

The last time I came here was years ago for breakfast. I don't know why this longstanding diner is never on my radar. As Yelp elite, I'm always looking for the next new thing I guess. My husband was browsing Yelp looking for a great burger and the recent reviews were enough to get our attention to stop in for a late lunch. It was 2:30pm on a Thursday and the hours posted online say they are open until 5:00pm but the hours posted on the door say until 3:00 so we just made it under the wire. They kind owners also let more people come in after 3:00 and didn't seem to mind. Both our burgers were made to order and super hot and fresh. They had shredded lettuce, mayo, and tomato. They have ketchup bottles on the tables so it's easy to add to your burger if desired. The shredded lettuce and tomato were ice cold which is the best! My bacon cheddar burger came with a super generous 3 slices of perfectly crispy bacon. My husband got a side of Mac and cheese while I got a side of fries. The Mac was good and after a sprinkle of pepper was just tasty. The fries were hot from the fryer and piping hot. I loved everything about my lunch here today. Super casual but really friendly and just genuinely great food made with care and quality that seems more and more rare these days. On top of all that the price can't be beat. I think one of the only drawbacks from Murphys lunch is parking. There are a few curbside spots right in front of but if those are taken there is a public parking garage 1/2 block away. If you've never tried this place, I urge you to go.

Needed a late lunch, and stumbled upon Murphy's. The owner was very kind and the sandwiches we ordered were great. Lucky to have found it, we really enjoyed it.

Murphy's is in many respects a hidden gem, tucked away in a relatively quiet area of downtown. It's not a big place either, as there are probably not more than ten dining tables in the primary dining area, though there are a few additional tables in an adjoining room. Nothing fancy here, just as a lunch counter should be. I went the way of a daily special, selecting the meatloaf. While what I received had gone a bit cold, it was still delicious. I imagine it'd be even better if it were warm. The mac and cheese I ordered to accompany my entree was the best I've found in this region, with a rich, cheesy flavor. The green beans and roll that also came along with the meal were simple and suitable. If you're in search of a quick meal while in the mid-city, Murphy's is deserving of your attention.

This place is a throwback to years gone by... A cafeteria style lunch counter serving a meat and two from hot trays behind glass and various sandwiches made to order. The owner/ chef / line cook / waiter/ cashier / buser / dishwasher has been running this place for the last two years by himself and is doing an incredible job. My parents brought me here when I was a child back in the the 80's and it warmed my heart to find out it was still here and going strong. I had my go-to from yesteryear, the country style steak and I ended up having three sides (mac and cheese, black eyed peas, and baby limas) since I couldn't decide on two. It was as good as I remembered. I watched a couple of cheeseburgers be prepared and I almost got that they looked so good. My wife had a BLT and she was very pleased with her sandwich. I think they're open Monday through Friday lunch only...... If you find yourself in downtown Winston-Salem at lunch time be sure to give this place a try. You won't be disappointed.

Absolutely amazing. Came in from out of town for a conference at the convention center, looking for somewhere local. So charming and welcoming. Great home cooked food, simple service. 10/10.
