This is a beautiful places inside but I would not come here for the baked goods. The history is amazing tho. Upstairs is like a museum.
The bread is not even cooked here anymore.
The sugar cake is on the dry side
The cherry strudel was actually pretty good.
I had such a pleasant experience for my first time as an adult here. We were immediately greeted, told about the history of the house and its original functionality and how it was evolved over time. The woman who greeted us gave us direction of how to walk through the two floors and where the baked goods, kitchen, and gift shop were located without me having to ask any questions. Additionally, she gave me one of the sweetest, most unique compliments I’ve ever received. I was so touched by her words that I forgot to ask her name but thank you so much- your words meant more to me than you know. :)
Stepping into Winkler Bakery felt like visiting a piece of living history. The aroma of wood-fired Moravian sugar cake and paper-thin spice cookies is irresistible. I loved watching bakers in period dress fire up the 200‑year‑old brick oven and chatting with the staff over warm treats—truly magical and unforgettable!
Winkler's is such an amazing bakery! Try the Orange Cranberry loaf. It's the best. The nice lady sat with us (we were there right when it opened) and talked with us. Very nice; I was very impressed.
Good good good
Couldn’t get in the building
Great Bakery took home a cherry almond strudel (4×7" rectangle that would make 4-5 slices), and it was awesome. Unusual and fun gifts are found here also.

We have been coming to the Candle Tea and Old Salem over 25 years. This year we came to the bakery for the traditional sugar cake. We spent $75 on three sugar cakes, one tin of sugar cookies and one small loaf of bread. The sugar cake was not the same they have been serving all these years it is different and not good. Feel like we were ripped off. Not coming back unless they bring bake the traditional sugar cakes.

The museum aspect was very cool but “sparse” doesn’t even begin to describe the food selection.
Very cool part of old time salem. Enjoyed our time here.

It's been a while since visiting Old Salem and Winkler Bakery. It was a beautiful day to walk around Old Salem and visit some of the businesses. Winkler Bakery has a nice selection of merchandise! The staff were friendly and helpful! Looking forward to coming back.
If you are visiting Winston-Salem, stop by Old Salem and tour the museum and historic homes (you will need to purchase a ticket) as well as Winkler Bakery and a couple other businesses.

My son and I went to Winston-Salem, North Carolina where one of the Winkler's related to me from Switzerland settled there and his church sponsored him with Winkler's Bakery where his family operated for hundreds of years. Even today, the same beehive oven is used to bake with the same recipes that Cristian Winkler brought from Switzerland in Europe. We bought bread, cookies and cakes that were baked in this oven. We looked over the houses that the Mennonites owned in the town. They had a tavern, shoemaker and other shops in the old Mennonite style. Sister Deborah who was very informative about the Winkler family there. I had an excellant experience, it was like a step into history. Thank you very much!!

Went in there for the first time with my partner in Feb. We picked out the Apple Strudel, but couldn't find any dates on anything. Overheard a couple asking the same "there's no dates...?" in the apple strudel section. I started wondering how they handle their inventory without any dates on the packages.Got home and had some bites, but we both noticed there were some odd looking bits inside. They have a bit of a growth pattern to them. We stopped eating it, put it in the fridge, and I called Winkler Bakery just to see if maybe we got a bad one. No one picked up.There's no email, just that phone number. We ended up contacting their instagram account on Feb 24th (the date of purchase) explaining it (with pics) asking if it was ok to eat. April 2nd we got a reply apologizing for the delay, and saying they checked with their director of retail and head of their bakery and they said it's not mold, it's cinnamon, and it'd grow from the outside first, not the inside. So I looked up moldy apple pie/strudel pics and found it can happen from the inside first. We replied back and asked if it was possible to get a replacement since our instincts were telling us not to eat that strudel and we had to throw it out way before they got back to us.They just left us on read. No reply. It's a $10.15 strudel, so you can understand it's a little frustrating. In my mind, if we got a replacement and it still had those same odd patterns, well then I guess we're wrong and it's just some purple cinnamon that spread out in a growth-like pattern. But after reading a review from just a week ago complaining they sell old, rotten food, I don't want to eat anything from there, I'd just want our $10.15 back.Don't take my word for it, though, here's pictures of it for you to be the judge.Mold or not, their customer service ain't great however you look at it.

Amazing homemade apple strudel… it was essentially a massive hand pie and I ate every bite. This place is so cute and worth the visit!
