We hadn’t been to the Manor since it changes hands. Our last experience at the Manor left much to be desired ;how dare we only order several appetizers and god forbid ask for desert at 8:15! We were made to feel very uncomfortable. Having been there many times in the past we always fooled ourselves into thinking it would be better this time. We believed the changeover in ownership would breath new life into an otherwise dingy and old fashioned atmosphere. So, after reading the reviews of glowing service and “fine dining” we once again tricked ourselves into believing it would be better. It was clear from the first step through the door nothing had changed. Same stuffy atmosphere! The host was pleasant and laughingly we were seated at the exact same table as our last visit. Truly nothing had changed, even the same dull billiard balls still hung next to the table. Service was a 2, while pleasant, it was far from “fine dining” dirty plates and empty glasses were left to their own devices. At one point I collected it and set it to the edge of the table. At the same time another table remained uncleaned for way more than it should have. After our initial drink (which was less than generous ) we debated whether we should just leave, but what the heck we were there maybe the food is exceptional! The shrimp cocktail was delicious. Cold, crisp just the right amount of spice, the kale salad was underwhelming and the lentil dish was pretty good but far from exceptional. All in all, a less than average experience.

We enjoyed dinner at the Van Horn estate this week, our third visit but first with the new menu. Started with kale Caesar salad and fish chowder followed by halibut and locally sourced steak (ribeye), all delicious. The lobster pappardelle, which we had on a prior visit, is still on the menu and highly recommended with generous lobster portions. We’ve also enjoyed the fish tacos, farm salad, charcuterie and deviled eggs in the Bistro, great flavors. Service in both dining rooms is friendly and attentive and the property has a wonderful ambience.

We did stay at the Inn for 2 nights and dined in the room for breakfast each morning and dinner one evening. The breakfasts were wonderful, hot and delicious. Service was outstanding. We also dined in the Van Horn Room for dinner one night and food and service were outstanding. We had the Pappardelle pasta with lobster and it was wonderful, with a good amount of lobster and the beurre blanc sauce was perfect. We also had the Statler Chicken on a bed of very fresh spinach with smashed fingerling potatoes done in beef tallow which that entire dish sang! I do not believe you can go wrong in the dining room, yes prices are more than most local but was well worth it.

We had an amazing Valentine’s Day dinner at the Van Horn dining room. The steak tartar was one of the best I’ve ever had! I had the signature Hot Pink martini which was incredible—perfect balance of sweet and spicy! I had my own gluten free roll which was great. We couldn’t have asked for a better dining experience!

I last reviewed this restaurant in 2019. Since then, the Inn has changed hands. Still a very nice table in an old and well preserved Inn. Limited menu, but good variety. My wife started with a crab bisque. Very good. I started with the Tuna Tartar. Different from the usual---the tuna was shredded. Accompanied by seaweed salad and won tons. My wife had another special of the day, steak in a very unusual sauce. Again, very good. I had the Crispy Skin Duck. Good, medium rare duck, but the skin was not close to crispy. We finished with a pumpkin spice cheese cake and Creme Broulee. Both very good. Extensive wine list with good selection of Italian and French. Good service.

From a culinary standpoint, the food was good. From a fine dining perspective, the waitstaff were just out of their league. We waited for menus. We waited for drinks. My husband finished his dinner while awaiting a glass of wine. They were kind and well meaning (not standing around) but mismatched in skill for such an expensive meal. We stayed so we also had breakfast here. Again, good food, but service is poor. Felt more like an interruption than the purpose of their being. The chef is good! He/ she may share the frustration. Train your crew.

Had dinner at Van Horn Dining Room the first night we were in the Squam Lake, Lake Winnipesaukee area. It was one of the best meals we had in the area. Most restaurants in this area are more casual and serve more "comfort" foods. Van Horn had a nice choice of well prepared dishes like Lamb, Duck, Fish along with chicken, Filet mignon and pork chops. Also has better wine list than most restaurants in the area.

This restaurant is located in the Manor on Golden Pond. It is open to the public and would be a wonderful place to go for a special occasion.
