The room at the Berkeley had some concerning maintenance issues. The carpet was torn in places, and the doors and windows did not seal properly, allowing noise from the hallway and outside to filter in. There was a damp, moldy smell, likely due to the bathroom lacking ventilation. The air conditioning vents showed signs of previous mold remediation efforts. The room appeared to have been renovated on the cheap, with little attention to detail. When I tried to call the front desk, the phone often went unanswered for long stretches. For the nightly rate charged, I expected better upkeep and service than what I experienced at this hotel.
Great location, easy walk to the beach and boardwalk, mostly accessible. What to watch for: NJ taxes will add a LOT to the room rate (i.e $80+). Ask for the rate including taxes. Parking. They get you for an additional $50 a day!!! And add more if your car is an SUV. Pet fee. $100 plus $25 a day. Get the picture? My room advertised for $350 went up to $595 with all of this extra. There's more: In-room entertainment. Not all of the TVs pick up Netflix and Prime. And they don't seem to know which rooms. So, if you want this, turn on the TV and test it out before you unpack and settle in. Better yet, try to ask for one in advance. No fridge in the room. Only one ice machine in the hotel, 5th floor. No coffee anywhere I could find. Have to walk two blocks. Other than those things, it is a decent hotel, large rooms, nice staff, bar at the pool. So hidden and exhorbitent fees, lack of basic amenities. Fix the details (other than the taxes, which they can't), and get more stars.
We booked a partial ocean view hotel. Given room on 8th floor with a very nice view of the ocean and the iconic smiling boy. Room was large with two double beds and a sofa bed. The layout was a bit strange because when you open the sofa bed, your path to the bathroom gets limited by the sofa bed and the desk and you're not able to open the drawers on the dresser. Overall, the room was very clean (Daily maid service). The beds were comfortable. The location can't be beat. Friendly staff. Expensive Valet parking, but worth it for in/out privileges.
My husband and I came down with our baby and golden retriever for the weekend to celebrate his birthday. This hotel is amazing, hands down. They are dog friendly, rooms are super comfortable, location is so convenient, but most of all this one individual was just amazing- SHAY. She is such an incredible, sweet, friendly, professional person. She was able to check us in early after a long drive in with our baby, provided us with exceptional service, made sure we had everything we needed in our room for our baby. Shay is just a wonderful human being and is the definition of what a manager should be like. I hope the Berkeley management reads this and acknowledges this individual. Thank you Shay - because of YOU we will be back again and again and again !!!!!
If you want a pool and to be across the street from the Ocean, probably the best most reasonable option in AP. Close to everything on foot, tons of food and drink and music options, wonder bar and stone pony. Beds were good, decent sized room. Room lacked a small refrigerator, no accessible power outlets in room 715, unplug the TV if you want to charge a phone. Pool area was nice and the wait / bar staff very friendly. Word of advice to the pool area staff.......you could make a fortune in drinks/tips if you would look around as you walk amongst people looking to be served, scan the crowd, stop staring at the floor.
We had four rooms reserved and had to push two back by a week. We were told over the phone it wouldn’t be a problem and that was reiterated at check in. However we were charged for all four rooms with no changes made. Poor service and communication from the front desk, zero follow up with customer service and we’re out $1000 that cost the property about 40 future nights while we support a project in town. We will not be back.
The location is great. We went on the holiday weekend and it was very busy for parking. The rooms are good with King Beds. It's an older hotel and we've been here before. Friendly staff. Great boardwalk with great options throughout the day and night. Many options for eating out and the staff gave us some local suggestions that were perfect.
I honestly don’t have enough bad things to say. Our room was a dump , nothing worked lightbulbs were blown, bathtub stopper fell off, key card charger fell off the wall, sheets were dirty, bar/restaurant were shut down, pool was closed. Asbury used to be cool -this place reminded me of its ghetto days. Lipstick on a pig. And there’s NO ONE to talk to about it. My call was transferred, I was hung up on and emails bounce back. It’s a big scam. Stay elsewhere.
This hotel feels a ittle shabby. You can tell it had an update at some point but it was only surface level. All of the doors, walls, fixtures were kept and just painted over, i.e., shabby doors and door locks, windows that you have to pull with all your might to open, bathroom sinks and tubs from the 80's (that don't drain properly FYI) and walls with a fresh coat of paint (which is no longer looking so fresh). Beds were also the most uncomfortable I've ever slept it. Worse than the cheap reno is that it's insanely expesinve to stay here for what it is ($400 for a Saturday night, huh?) and they nickle and dime you for everything; parking, pool, and no complimentary coffee. There's no nice restaurant or bar or any enjoyable atmosphere. Survey says - no thanks.
Won't go back. Very overpriced. Can't believe we had to pay $65 a night to park the car in THEIR parking lot--- that's on top of $400/night for a mediocre room; not to mention it was mid-week and off season so nothing was open; not even their gift shop or coffee shop. Forewarning these rooms do not have a refrigerator, coffee machine or microwave. Thankfully they did provide coffee and tea in the lobby in the morning. They're just plain old rooms---and a bit smelly with carpeting (most places switching to hardwood or tile floors for sanitary purposes). Oh and the maintenance/cleaning guy reeked of marijuana. Also of note is that nearly everywhere you go in Asbury Park you must pay $2/hour to park using kiosks.

Beautiful renovated hotel. Had a problem with the lock and VINCENT (front desk) took care of it right away and was so helpful and pleasant!! Shea was also helpful! Big room with an ocean view. We all enjoyed!!
We have been coming to this hotel for different events over the past few years and have not had any issues until our stay in December. We arrived at approximately 8pm on Friday night to check in, as we were running in the Santa Run on Saturday morning. Upon arrival, we were sent to our room - Room 808. When we got up to the room we checked out our “partial ocean view” which was clearly stated during the reservation process and my confirmation email… ✓ BOOKING DETAILS Hotel confirmation: xxxxxxxxxx Arrival Date: Friday, December 2, 2022 Departure Date: Saturday, December 3, 2022 Room Type: Berkeley Partial Ocean View Standard Room - Two Queen Be We were a little confused as we were clearly not at all on the east side of the hotel, so we went down and spoke to the front desk clerk. We asked why we didn’t get a partial ocean view room, when our reservation was for a partial ocean view room. His answer was that “it is either partial ocean, partial city or partial lake” – to which we were like “WHAT???” and showed him our email confirmation which clearly states “partial ocean view.” He literally just kept repeating himself and told us there were no more partial ocean view rooms and “that’s how the hotel works.” We chose that view because last year we had a perfect view of when people began lining up and the happenings going on down the block for the race. Anyway, we got nowhere fast with him and went back to our partial Pacific Ocean view room. It appears that the partial ocean view rooms are typically about $30 more per night than the standard “city” view room. So at the minimum, it would have been nice for him to offer us a partial refund on our reservation. He appeared uninterested and earlier was on the phone making faces to the person standing at the desk about the person he was on the phone with. Very unprofessional. We decided to give up that battle and address it later on. I emailed the management of the hotel on December 5th and December 12th Furthermore, we had a number of other issues with our room. The bathroom sink was clogged and would not drain from simple handwashing. The tub would also not drain until after the person taking a shower was out of the tub. Each of us was standing in three inches of water during our respective showers. Kinda gross. Also, on the subject of gross, the toilet seat was stained and discolored yellow. Other reviews here seem to mirror my experience...and it appears that my sentiments are very similar to many, many others. “The Front Desk Manager (Vincent) gave the same line about how views work to other customers who posted their reviews online.” It is a shame because its location is great - if not for all of the other issues, I would have stayed here again, but no thanks - that was the last time for sure.
**This is an updated review** We stayed here while attending a wedding. The price was decent compared to others in the area. The hotel is quite old and includes the Johnny Cash Suite . The downstairs entrance and areas has a retro feel which is fun. The hotel room also had a retro feel including the old phone. I do think though that our room could have used some love…carpet fix to name one. I was not thrilled that they only allow heat to be in the rooms and ours was a balmy 75 degrees. The maintenance man opened our window which worked-made the room quite comfortable. The hotel is right across the street from the boardwalk, beach and restaurants; you can also easily walk to the town of Asbury as well. At first I gave this location 1 star because…there was a large group and basically they took over the place…up all hours of the night and very loud…very loud- not sure why the desk clerk or the adults of the group did not do anything about it. I called the hotel Monday and discussed how disruptive they were and about the screaming in the hall way. I was pleasantly surprised that the director of the hotel gave a gesture of apology which I much appreciated.
We booked my daughters wedding in January 2022 for June 2023, we signed a contract and gave the deposit and settled on a menu etc…. Stopped in a few months later to discuss rehearsal dinner only to be informed the event planner was gone. Met with a new person and had the food tasting. It was AWFUL! Met with his boss and they promised to fix everything, they did not! 7 months out from the wedding we got an email from the Berkeley’s attorney cancelling the wedding without any given reason. He claimed they had the right to cancel for any reason. We will be suing them. Do not consider using this venue! Extremely unprofessional and rude!
Recently had to stay at the Berkeley because of a Wedding there. The average week day rate was $300. The entire hotel is old & dirty, all staff wears their street close, no food to be had most of time. Sometime you can get a slice of pizza from a filthily lobby pizza shop. GROSS Rooms. All old furniture and a filthy carpet. BAD WIFI & Satellite TV works 50% of time THEN I WAS OVERCHARGED ON CREDIT CARD
