Hills of Herat Basking Ridge

What a wonderful find! The decor, service, and food at this restaurant are all outstanding. The atmosphere is welcoming and the owner and staff are all top notch. We had a delicious beet salad, kabobs, lamb chops, eclairs, kunafa, rice pudding, and mocktails! Everything was superb!!

Food was excellent. Very fresh and full of flavor. The service needs improvement. We waited about 20 minutes before anyone came to take our order, then another 15 minutes before we were given water. We asked for our appetizer but the bread never arrived. We also had to ask for the bill three times. The service was very slow, but the food was incredibly delicious!

Absolutely amazing food. We tried the mantu and ashak dumplings for the first time and they were both amazing. We ordered the lamb chops and steak kebabs as main courses and they were both cooked to perfect. Very moist, tender and fresh tasting. Always love the spinach rice and bread. The ambiance and decor in this new location are also beautiful. Can't wait to return!!

Honestly have no clue how it has such good ratings. Prices and portions are ridiculous. 41 buck for the kebob special that said 1 steak, 1 chicken and one beef. It was literally 2 tiny pieces of each with 2 scoops of rice under it. Definitely wont return was still hungry after getting apps and a 41 dollar meal.

If you want Hills of Herat, go to Martinsville where the portions and the service are much better than those in Basking Ridge. In the Basking Ridge location, half the plate is carbs, and if you ask to change, they will trick you into thinking they can change the rice for veggies. However, later they will charge you the full price for greasy veggies and just take away the rice. In fact, they will charge you more than the menu price of veggies. The salad is a quarter of a tomato and a quarter of an onion. Only go to Martinsville, there it is real Afghan food.

Outstanding food, and outstanding staff. Everyone is extremely friendly when coming into the restaurant. I always order to go for lunch and I am never disappointed. I go for the Chicken Kabob with Kabuli rice and it’s amazing. The chicken is ALWAYS seasoned perfectly and I’m never disappointed, it leaves me full and I always have left overs to take home. 10/10 will always come back to get lunch ! I wish I had a location in my town !!

The staff was so friendly. The food was excellent. I had the eggplant and my husband had the veal quorma. We will definitely go back.

If I could give this restaurant 6/5 stars I would. Hills of Herat was my final meal before going back to college and it blew me away. I ordered the lamb chops with naringe rice and it was the most flavorful meal I had ever tasted. Their main courses come with a warm crispy on the outside soft on the inside bread and a warm lentil soup. The servers and hostess were extremely warm and welcoming and the atmosphere was very elevated. I’m a fine dining foodie and have been to countless Michelin rated restaurants, but this would by far be my last meal!
