While eating alone at the Front area during the Fall. A guest sat near me and in conversation he shared that he taught disabled students on the NJ Mainland, in turn, I shared my Teaching Experience in ROTC. His Wife, a Steven Starr employee arrived and demanded that he join her with other Starr employees at their Table. He told her to jump in the Bay. He and I had dinner together.GREAT FOOD & SERVICE at the Merion InnHave Starr employees ever had any manners or Is it a Requirement to be OBNOXIOUS and Rude.An Entire Generation needs a Check Up from the Neck Up.
Used to go to this restaurant all of the time until this past summer, when we there and were seated in a room with 2 big table groups. We were a party of three, one which is an 8th year old child. One of the tables which consisted of a group of older adults complained to the waitress about my son playing with his iPhone. They said that they heard sounds and that the sounds were disturbing them. I thought that this was strange since their table had been loud with gregarious laughter. I would not have had a problem with their request for my son to stop playing a certain game on his phone, however what got to me was the waitress coming over and telling my son, not addressing the request to me but telling my son under no uncertain terms to shutoff his cellphone. I thought that this was very rude and for sure overstepping on her part since this was not her child and we were as much customers as the other table. Therefore, I do not recommend this place if you have children of any age. It went down in my estimation of a good restaurant in Cape May.
I love going to the bar when they first open and sit there with an actual well made cocktail. The food is just OK or adequate. The whole atmosphere is the experience even the piano player!
Delicious food in Victorian surroundings! After years of visiting Cape May we finally tried The Merion. What a great find! This is now our favorite restaurant! Great service and everything is always delicious!
The oldest restaurant in Cape May, the Merion Inn has wonderful atmosphere, excellent food, and caring, attentive service. There is an early seating price fixed 3 course dinner including appetizer, entre, and dessert. There is live music on most nights. I look forward to our next visit.
TERRIBLE! - We are frequent Cape Mayers... this is hands down the worst restaurant in Cape May! It was a cold, rainy and windy night... Sherlock Holmes weekend ;-) We came for a late dinner but upon walking in were hit with this terrible musty moldy smell. The wine selection is common and terribly over-priced. The menu seems to offer some variety... but everything is low-end diner quality. The pumpkin soup had the texture of oatmeal. It was dried out of moisture. The flavor was pretty good though. That was the highlight of the meal. The bacon wrapped scallops were tiny and flash fried... not what you would expect from a fine restaurant in Cape May. A joke to be honest.I had the short rib and my better half had the stuffed lobster tail. The short rib was covered in a dark gelatinous gravy. DO NOT order the short rib. The stuffed lobster tail was NOT a lobster tail with stuffed crabmeat or stuffed lobster meat on top. It was a lobster shell with over-salted lobster imperial inside. No actual whole lobster tail? I'm pretty sure the mashed potatoes that came with it came out of a box... they were gluey. DO NOT order the stuffed lobster tail.We didn't make it to desert... I had a terrible headache due to the mold and had to get out. My better half is in the bathroom dealing with the aftermath while I write this.Primal, Vintage, Washington Inn, Black Duck, Secondo, and Panico's are all exceptional places to eat (in that order). For pete's sake... don't go to the Merion Inn. They need to gut the place and remediate it.
All good, food and service was excellent. Had a reservation and was seated on time. The noise level is very loud. The combination of the din of the crowd, and the piano music made it very hard to hold a conversation.
We started dining at the Merion Inn when we were dating, and have now been married 51 years. The food is even better than 50 years ago. The fried shrimp & scallops were large, tender and very crisp. Coleslaw and potato cup delicious. My husband's steak cooked perfectly and very tender. Lobster and crabmeat in sauce was too rich for our taste, but still delicious. Our waitress was attentive and pleasant. Tables well spaced such that we felt comfortable even with covid. Interior decor charmingly victorian.
Merino Inn has upped its game on food. I always loved the place for its ambiance, but now I find it on a par with the other top restaurants in Cape May including the Ebbit Room and PSI! Good work. Can't wait until you reopen next season.
The waitress was really unfriendly. The food made up for it. I get it, the service industry had really taken a hit with rude demanding customers. I know this from experience. But if we were kind and patient with the waitress, that should have been her hint to be a bit more pleasant. Food and liveliness was fabulous!

This is one of my favorite date night spots . It’s cozy & romantic. The food we had last night was our usual stuffed lobster tail . It was delicious. The server Bobby Smith was great ! We really enjoyed our night and can’t wait to go back !!
The food is always good. Amy was our server and she was excellent. My husband is on a low sodium diet and she made certain the kitchen prepared his meal accordingly. My only concern is my husband is in a wheelchair and the ramp leading from the patio is almost impossible to push a person up -- and then there's a step at the end. If a person cannot get out of the chair you definitely need muscle to get access. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
Terrible service, small portions. Very noisy.
The service was terrible. We ordered our food. Received it quickly. Big up charge for a potato instead of fries. We were there 1 hr. Waitress never came over once to see how our food was. The short rib entree was dry and small portion. My express short ribs never came with the horseradish sauce but waitress zoomed back and Forth to other tables and was never able to even ask for salt. My dish came with a mini dessert which she never told us what it was. We felt because our meals might not be as large as any other table she did not care. We always order dessert or coffee we just wanted to leave. It was so crowded And noisy from people hanging at bar before being seated. Could not hear the piano player. We come to cape May 4 times a year. Always wanted to eat here but now was disappointed.
I took my friend here who was visiting from out of town. Everything was MAGNIFICENT. From the atmosphere, the food, drink, and service- superb! Kathy waited on us and was very friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. I highly recommend the merion cup, and the chicken francaise!
