Great hidden gem. Service was friendly and the food was excellent. Will keep this in mind for special occasions or date nights in the future.
We hadn't eaten here in several years, after an unpleasant experience. Our visit this time was great. It was a very cold evening and there were maybe 6 people in the entire place. Both my wife and I (we were celebrating our wedding anniversary) ordered duck, mine the cassoulet. It both cases the food was prepared well and was delicious. I had an "appetizer" of mushrooms in puff pastry - very tasty and quite filling. What stood out for us was our server, Rico. He was properly attentive without being smothering, given the lack of other patrons. But what stood out for me was his recommendation for a wine with my duck casserole. It was right on the mark. I enjoy wines, and have a some familiarity with them, so his spot-on suggestion was really appreciated. Fine job, Rico!
Always enjoy a fine meal at Sophie's. The staff is most attentive and the food is delicious!
Food as always is delicious. Best French onion soup! I love the escargot. The staff was very attentive and gracious. This is always our go to spot for a special occasion. For Christmas Eve it was not overly booked and festive.
Food was fantastic, staff were awesome and it was just a great overall experience. Will definitely be back in the future, already planning next visit.
Always a great experience at Sophie's. Great food, drinks and service. Consistently wonderful!
We always enjoy our experience at Sophie's Bistro. The staff work very well as a team. The dinner was very tasty. We enjoyed thw prix fix Beaujolais Neuve dinner. The dinner included appetizer, entree, dessert and a bottle of the Beaujolais. The only thing that was a little disturbing was if you wanted coffee or tea , the charge was $5.75 a cup
My criteria for a great restaurant is consistency and fair pricing. I have been going to Sophie's for years because of those two items. The food is always fresh and terrific. Prices re fair. Peter, the owner makes everyone feel welcome and appreciated. You cannot beat this restaurant for a wonderful dining experience.
Great old French restaurant. Owner greeted us at bar entrance and was very welcoming. They gave us a choice of sitting up front near bar area or in a quiet back room. Back room was perfect for catching up with old friends. If it was just a fun night out with my wife we would sit up front. Decor just worn enough to give you that old school restaurant feel. Clean. Huge selection plus Second Crepes special menu for the month. Escargot and Fried Brie apps were great. The bread was over the top. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Steak frites, Trout Almondine and Seafood puffed pastry with a delicious light cream sauce. Apple and peach crepe desert was a great ending to share. Waiter brought us a second desert on the house and the 4 of us couldn't finish it. Extensive wine and cocktail menu. Easy parking in lot. Friendly staff. N Glad we went! Not familiar with area as we came up from the shore and drive in through New Brunswick's busy streets near hospital had us a little concerned about the neighborhood (mix of RU college, locals and street people) but things changed last mile and all was cool. Made it an adventure!
I had what I thought would be a simple hamburger. It was probably the best burger I've had in a very long time. Juicy & cooked to perfection ! Sophie's never disappoints!
Restaurantji Recommends
Sophie's is unquestionably one of the finest eateries in Middlesex County. The food and the staff exceed expectations and one can be assured of the consistency of Sophie's!!
Amazing food in this hidden gem! The restaurant is both casual yet beautiful, quaint but not pretentious. Perfectly executed ambiance with absolutely delicious food. Every plate that came out was better than the next. Cannot wait to go back again.
Sophie's is indeed a gem of a restaurant for anyone looking for a high quality ambience and specialty food (French) in Somerset, NJ and surrounds. I simply love my visits here and the escargot is the first thing (it happens to an appetizer available both for lunch and for dinner) I get to order and then everything else. Besides the escargot I strongly recommend for the entrees (pepper steak, duck and the trout besides a whole lot of other tempting delicacies). The service is excellent and the bathrooms are always very clean . There is ample parking in the lot containing Sophie's and so no need to worry about parking and having a great time at the restaurant.
Partners birthday with son and daughter. Cocktails spot on. Appetizers were perfect. We all had different entrees, and we had fun tasting each other's dinner. Bottle of red with dinner then coffee and dessert. Perfect evening
Sophie's Bistro is one of our go-to restaurants. It's such a gem of a place and never disappoints. Owner Peter is one of the most warmest host.
