The Staff at Rat's is outstanding. Nick, our waiter was fun, gracious, and wonderful. Our server was very considerate. The concierge David remembered our note that my husband was celebrating his birthday, and he receive a complimentary piece of chocolate banana cake and coffee ice cream. His french onion soup and artic char were savory and seasoned with care. My marinated anchovy ceasar salad and chicken croque monsieur with small salad were wonderful... we ate some for dinner last night. We are proud members of Grounds for Sculture, and would recommend Rat's Restaurant to all. Thank you for a beautiful afternoon.
It's an experience...we went for lunch and it was lovely, service was particularly great. Would love to go back for dinner sometime to sample the wine list!
Rats Restaurant - Grounds for Sculpture was a great experience. From walking-in, checking-in and throughout our early dinner the staff was great. We love the ambiance; however, for me personally, I wish the music was a bit louder as it was too soft for me. The decor, the service and the food were better than what we had expected. Following our dinner, the maître d' and the wait staff invited us to explore the entire restaurant and bar area. We can't wait to go back in the spring and experience the restaurant as well as the entire property once again. With the snow falling outside providing a beautiful background, it was the perfect retreat to a warm and fantastic dinner. Thank you Rats Restaurant - Grounds for Sculpture, Erik & Ruane (NJ).
The menu every year has less and less options which is disappointing. Croque monsieur edges of the bread was hard and value wise regretted ordering it. A few more options on the menu will keep me coming back as a customer.
We were really looking forward to have a dinner in Rats with friends, we had very good experience 3 years ago. First of all, menu is totally different than menu pubslished on Opentable. Secondly, we took burrata with wild mushrooms, it had to much vinegar and burrata was very small for a dish that costs $24. Thirdly, short rib was a little bit burnt and last one - there is no seafood or fish dishes, except for shrimp cocktail that was outrageously expensive and included 4 shrimps. Overall, we are not coming back unfortunately.
I have been dining at Rats for many years but lately I've seen a decline in the menu, the offerings are fewer than they used to be, the portions are smaller, the prices are up and that wonderful French bread has been dli Instead. The wait staff is still very nice and efficient and the ambiance is always wonderful but that doesn't quite make up for the shortcomings of the menu. I will be coming back when the restaurant reopens but hoping for a better food experience.
New year's eve at Rats was a disaster! First of all the on-line menu was totally mis-represented. Starting with the cocktails: No Pear and St Germaine martini Then the appetizers: No oysters Followed by the entrees: The only entree on the New Years menu Bone in Ribeye for $80.00 only 2 left at 7:30! 5 entrees on the whole menu 2 were inedible, the smash burger and the bone in short ribs, disgusting!
Smash burger is very much NOT a smash burger. Very mediocre, even it was just a burger. Chicken croquette monsieur also mediocre. Chicken should have been pounded out, bread was soggy, sandwich cold. Because of holiday parties, service was very slow. Best part of the meal was the French Onion Soup. Good balance of soup, onions, bread and Gruyère.
An amazing experience on Thanksgiving! Food is great, service is spectacular, ambience is very nice and cozy! Highly recommend to anyone visiting NJ for the holidays or else!
Another great dining experience at Rats. Our server, Aime, was friendly and accommodating.

Excellent service by Amy and as always a delicious lunch. I truly enjoy Rat's unique atmosphere.
Wonderful waitstaff. Drinks, while expensive, were a good Pour and tasty! Entree was a bit delayed, which was no problem for us as we were enjoying the experience and, unbidden, we were given a cheese platter to share for the wait. This was for a birthday dinner and dessert arrived with candles and Happy Birthday in chocolate. All in all wonderful experience.
Wonderful atmosphere. Reservation was handled well. Great setting. Excellent service - Nick was very helpful, prompt, and pleasant. Great salads - Cauliflower, Quinoa. Excellent onion soup. Cheese burger - just OK. Limited selection of main courses. Overall - great place.
Thr food was good, but very expensive. The portions were small for the price and not many options for lunch. One soup and one salad with added chicken was $47 and change.
The only restaurant open in October was Rat. It was our first time here and we were led in through the back patio entrance from the gardens. I have an electric mobility scooter and it was very difficult to maneuver. This place is NOT handicap friendly! We had to go all the way through the restaurant to check in at the front desk. Host was very slow, as others also commented. Food was ok, but overpriced. Service was good. Chair pads were disgustingly filthy, stained, and I assume unsanitary. Dinnerware was terribly worn. Desserts were $17 each! No signage and no one to tell us that exiting via the front door would take us to a parking lot, and NOT back into the gardens. Again, all this while trying to maneuver a mobility scooter. It was our 42nd anniversary and we were very frustrated to say the least. We will not return!
