My wife and I are on the #eatjersey challenge to visit and have a meal in all 564 towns of NJ. We chose Tavern on the Lake for Hightstown, our 150th town.
Great eats and comfort food in a place that is at the center of the town. They have a fantastic beer selection on draft that rotates over time. For the fall season, we had a Hot Toddy and Spiked Cider. The French dip sandwich and crab cakes were great.
When there's warmer weather, they have a great outdoor patio too!

We are visiting the town and gave Tavern on the Lake a shot. We were not disappointed. It has a homey feel with a surprisingly wide variety of both bar foods as well as entrees and comfort food. Loved the pot-roast stew on mashed potatoes with green beans. Healthy portion and great flavor. The bar was lively but not at all obnoxious - just a fun place to hang out with other folks enjoying themselves. Added to the upbeat feel of the restaurant. Certain a repeat spot for us on our future trips!

I try, very hard, to give this place a chance and it always disappoints. The restaurant is consistently understaffed and yesterday lunch was no exception. One server for 8-10 tables outside and about six tables inside or at the bar. As usual the food never comes out as ordered (no cheese on a cheeseburger) and deciding to keep what we got because if we sent it back we'd have to wait another 20 minutes to see the server again. Tables have no condiments/napkins. This place is consistently lacking. We went because it was local and we wanted to eat outside. Just lower your expectations and you will not be disappointed.

Great little stop on a quick layover. Waiting for my dog . Pretty crowded for a Friday afternoon. A lot of school teachers in the place after a rough week. I guess. The bartender was very nice. Very busy. I forgot her name. I am sorry she had a beautiful nose ring. She assisted me in buying everybody a round of drinks. Hopefully the tip I left her was enough. I will definitely come back to this place when I'm in the area again. I did have the bratwur sandwich which was very nice along with the french onion soup which I would say was very good. I was hoping to sit outside a little too cold for some I guess. Thank you for a great afternoon

One of my favorite bars ever! Bartenders are consistent and always willing to accommodate even when the place is packed. My favorite is hot chicken strips w/ atomic on the side. Craft beer list always changing but always good.
Good food, we got the burger, and nice atmosphere. Dog friendly on the lower patio, and they bring a bowl of water. Parking in the lot next door and rlnice views of the lake. @jasperthedog2022

I went yesterday, September 11, around 5 pm. The bar was almost empty, I wanted to have a drink and some food, but the customer service in this place is terrible. The bartender saw me and passed by twice and never talked to me, I saw the guy looked at me while he was washing glassware after more than 5 minutes waiting. I got up and left. I would never recommend this place to anyone.
