I had previously rated Burlews a well-deserved 5 stars, but am editing my review due to my unexpected negative experience there tonight.My girlfriend and I had invited our good friend to join us at our favorite comfort food oasis, Burlew's.We had been patronizing this Keyport gem for years and were eager for her to join us in what we had expected to be the usual great time with tasty food, lively music and good drinks. After ordering 3 entrees, multiple drinks, an appetizer and coffee, we asked for the check and readied ourselves to leave. Shortly after settling our bill, a live band began to set up and we decided to start a new tab. When we informed our server of the change, we were told that we were welcome to stay, but ONLY if we relocated to the bar. We reminded him that we had merely decided to continue our stay at the restaurant and wished to start a new check. He told us we would have to wait for the verdict as he had to "discuss the situation with his manager". We were flabbergasted! All we wished to do was start a new check, order some drinks and appetizers and enjoy the music. We were soon informed that our table was needed and we would have to either move to the bar or leave. I can't begin to explain the level of disappointment we felt!I, myself, have been in the restaurant business for more than 36 years and NEVER would have mistreated ANY patron in such a fashion, much less one that had previously told anyone that would listen just how great their restaurant was.I'm writing this review in hopes that Burlew's owner will reeducate the staff as to how to properly treat their patrons. Until then, count me out.

I highly recommend this establishment IF you enjoy being treated like a second class citizen. My friends have eaten here several times and took me here for an early dinner. We ordered drinks, appetizers, entrees and coffee. Shortly after paying the check we noticed that a band was setting up to play. Rather than continue our evening elsewhere, we decided we would stay and order drinks while we enjoyed some live music. The band was good and our intent was to have several rounds of drinks over the next couple of hours. After finding a waiter we asked to start a new tab. A manager approached our table stating that he would need to check with HIS manager (no shortage of higher-ups in this place) but he was “pretty sure” that the only way we would be allowed to order drinks and enjoy the music was to be seated at the (already quite full) bar. He returned shortly having discussed it with THE final-decision-making manager and repeated his previous statement. We would NOT be allowed to remain at our table.There was no one waiting to be seated for dinner AND there were empty tables. The fact that we just paid a substantial food and drink bill meant ZERO to management. The fact that we were going to be staying for at least 1-2 hours and ordering drinks meant ZERO to management.My friends were appalled at the treatment we received. They will not be returning and I certainly will not.THE LOWEST LEVEL OF CUSTOMER SERVICE POSSIBLE.Perhaps management should leave the decisions to the wait staff who are by far more professional - they know who the good customers are.

Great food and efficient, nice staff. The drink menu is solid as well. Keyport leolmonade is my go-to. Atmosphere rating is low for me due to live music, seemingly every time I'm there at night -- not my cup of tea, but doesn't stop me from revisiting.
