Eppes Essen Deli is an absolute gem, and Josh, the owner, is the heart and soul of this iconic establishment. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with warmth, and the service feels like you’ve been a regular for years. But let me tell you about the **pastrami and Swiss on rye**—it’s truly on another level. The pastrami is perfectly tender, with just the right amount of smoky, savory flavor that melts in your mouth, while the Swiss adds the perfect touch of creaminess. All of this sandwiched between their freshly baked rye bread, which is perfectly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, makes for an unforgettable experience.
Josh’s passion for quality and authenticity shines through in every bite. Whether you’re a first-timer or a longtime fan, Eppes Essen never disappoints. If you’re in the area, this is the deli you can’t miss—thanks to Josh and his dedication to keeping deli traditions alive with excellence!

I started going here when my job ordered lunch from them for the first time. I love the food. The potato knish and the babka cinnamon bread are delicious.
Diane (or Diana) at the checkout is super nice and a pleasure to talk to.

Food is okay and place is large and clean but the prices are crazy. $20 for kasha and $25 for a basic turkey sandwich with cheese is just too much.

I had the matza ball soup and tuna sandwich. Very good. They bring you a pickle with coleslaw, which was sooo good... there was ample indoor seating and everything was super clean.

I have been coming to Eppes Essen since I moved to West Orange in 1976. Your food was always great. I have since moved to Somerville, but come to the restaurant whenever I am in the area. I went again this past Saturday afternoon for a take out sandwich. The rye bread was noticeably smaller,, therefore making the corned beef sandwich smaller. The corned beef was also horribly dry, and uncharacteristic of your former quality. The pickles that came with it were small water logged barely brined cucumbers, not the yummy dills of before. I clearly remember the juicy sandwiches and wonderful accompaniments you used to serve...what are you thinking!
As my grandmother used to say, this was Drek!
Thanks for the memories, but I seriously doubt I will go out of my way to visit you again.

Wow. I was so psyched for a pastrami sandwich and Wow was I disappointed. Pale cold meat ( I asked for hot). No fat flavorless and rubbery. First and last time here. Too many other options available to be paying a fortune for a sub standard sandwich.
