Amazing food (cannot miss out on the dry aged burger and French onion soup) and even better service. When we asked the staff if our French onion soup could be warmed up, they offered to make us a new one.

A great place to go for a casual dinner with friends. The menu was varied, providing many choices. I had the burger, which was so delicious and cooked to perfection. I highly recommend The Black Horse Tavern and Pub for a relaxing dinner in lovely surroundings

Mendham is filled with historical buildings, and this place definitely is. A renovated building from 1740 served patrons who stopped along the way on the stagecoach before there was a United States. Located on W Main Street, The Black Horse Tavern & Pub is considered New Jersey’s oldest continually running establishment, where my partner and I came for lunch today. The reservation was easily made via Resy.

Upon entering as first-timers to the recently renovated pub, we were greeted by the host offering a cozy, warm, and rustic vibe. The upgrade has now expanded several dining rooms to include a complete remodeling with booths lining the walls, a fireplace creating a focal point, and tables in the center of the room. The Clam Bar room accommodates private celebrations. We got a high-top table by the window next to the bar.

Their menu features American classics updated to reflect post-Revolutionary War standards, such as wings, pot pie, crab cakes, bronzini, dry-aged steak, and roasted chicken, to name a few.

We decided on the Chicken Pot Pie, which came with mixed veggies in a half-inch pan with a flat cookie-type biscuit on top. No flaky deep crust, and it was served hot, and the Steak Dip Sandwich with Sweet Potato Fries. Food was tasty. The service was good, and our server, Jessica, was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions and made recommendations. The price was comparable to the area. Our only complaint would be the flies buzzing around by the window.

We could recommend this place.

I really liked the updates they’ve done to the place—it looks great. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with my food and drinks. My first drink was so sweet that I couldn’t even take a second sip. I then tried an Aperol spritz, but it was flat. For appetizers, we ordered a few items including wings, which we specifically asked to be well done. Instead, the wings came out undercooked and soft, so we couldn’t even eat them.

Nice vibe--recently remodeled. Wait staff was attentive but not over bearing. Reasonable prices for having the claim to fame as the oldest continually operating restaurant.

Had been waiting for a few months to try this place. Was redone a few months back. Definitely worth the wait. Excellent food and great service. Get a table away from the bar if you want a quieter dinner.

Our waitress Caroline was fabulous!! The manager on the other hand was rude! My friend had a hair in her chicken and they took it back and made a new one, but still put it on the bill. He came over to our table and treated us like children and said the chicken should not be off the bill because there was a hair. This is a disgrace and I am disappointed! We came here to celebrate and the manager treated us horrible! Do not recommend unless you get Caroline as your waitress!

Sad what this has become, as it used to be terrific. Will not visit again. Potential bacterial contamination. Be warned.

Loved the Black Horse Tavern for years. Would go there for family birthdays and brunches quite often.
Unfortunately the new corporate ownership ruined the menu and food quality. Bubbly shrimp was one of the best items on the menu, now gone. Ordered oysters, shell pieces in the oysters. French onion soup, budget broth, barely melted cheese, and who puts a small piece of seeded semolina bread in a French onion soup?? Got a chicken pot pie, terrible. I mean it was borderline soup and the crust top was atrocious. It was a sweet cracker and that you literally could pick up the whole thing with two fingers. It wasn’t even baked with the pot pie considering it’s a different shape than the actual pot pie. What was wrong with the flaky buttery top?
Brightest spot was easily the service. Servers were amazing. Super nice, super happy.
Unfortunately an unbelievable staple restaurant has been crossed off the list. Renovations, which still aren’t done somehow, look amazing however the new corporate ownership and cook absolutely ruined the classic menu replaced it with one that completely misses the mark from top to bottom…

As a lifetime patron of the Black Horse Pub/ Tavern; I had the chance to review it for the first time since it finished its “remodel” after three years of work.

I grew up in Mendham and lived there for 30 years (1970-1999). All through HS and countless reunions. I must say that the set up is almost identical.

Service was great, except for waiting for the maître / hostess to bring me to an open table in a virtually empty at the time Pub at 4:45pm, but for perhaps 15 others.

Service was very good. Thank you to my server. As for the food; pricey. The seating was AWEFUL and crowded. I was never more cramped in my booth adjacent to the white granite Like top. Crab cakes were good, but had little sauce. Requested extra. The appetizer cold crabmeat and what tasted like a mix of salmon came with horrible “Premium” Crackers. Cheep and stale. What would have been better would have been a Carr’s crackers or roasted bread. My roast chicken sandwich on a baked greatness dry.

Because the booth seating was SOOO bad, I’d rather not return. Four appetizers and a chicken sandwich and drinks [one mix, two beers and two inexpensive Cabernets], I would NOT recommend it for much more then drinks and they no longer have colossal shrimp appetizers.

Everything was wonderful, except the atmosphere was loud.

Apps were just average . The chicken dish was tasty. The desserts were nothing to rave about
