Last night was THE BEST meal I’ve had in Montclair, NJ PERIOD!!
Sally the owner was so very kind and welcoming to my Family of four from the minute we walked in late in the evening, with no reservations! We were also blessed with the best server! THANK YOU Shanice for your very informative and descriptive ways of informing us of the appetizers, entrees and desserts! All of them were TASTY, EXCELLENT and EXACTLY how you described them! As self described foodies that have traveled the world and have eaten in thousands of top tier restaurants with our children, this one is definitely top tier!!
What did we get?
Meatballs, Caesar salad, Gnocchi, Red snapper, Salmon, Chicken, Cheese Cake, Tiramisu.
This is a BYO wine restaurant but there is a very well stock wine store next door!
Best regards,
Alice

I’m not sure if they got new owners or a new chef but this place is so different than it was 1.5-2 years ago. I used to LOVE it. I went last night for my birthday, the place was DEAD maybe two other tables aside from us. The dishes were bland- not bad but not great. I’m sad I used to love this place, but the service and everything was off. The scallops used to be my favorite and they were over cooked. I won’t be heading back again unfortunately.
Great food

I had dinner tonight for the first time at the Scala and had a great experience. AB did a great job taking care of our table, gave us time to review the menu. We had a Caesar salad, pasta with osso bucco and lasagne with prosciutto and flourless chocolate torte with pistachio gelato. All dishes were well made and super tasty. I definitely would be back.

Food is excellent! We had several dishes including the Sole and Snapper which were fresh and cooked to perfection. Options for inside and outside dining. Service was good, albeit they had a bit of a hard time keeping up.
Wheelchair accessibility: No stairs. Indoor and outdoor seating options.

Had to wait to be greeted by a hostess.
When it comes to food, salmon was terrible, huge regret! The truffle ravioli were good.
Impossible to drink their tap water, I wish more restaurants filtered water.
Service was extremely slow.
Won’t be coming again for sure!

I took my parents here for an early weekday dinner. It was a full restaurant. The sister of the brothers who own the place came over and told us we were eating her grandmother’s meatball recipe and she was delightful- so were the meatballs.
Our waiter, however, was so rude. I tried to place an additional order to go two times and each time he kept putting his finger up at me because he was too busy. I finally got in calf the order and he walked away without hearing the rest. The next time I got his attention to place the rest of the order which was about ten minutes later, he said, “I know I know. I already it in.” Without hearing what I wanted to order. At this point I said, “I’m so sorry. Can you please let us know when you’re not busy? I would like to finish the order.” And he took it down, rolled his eyes and walked away. He continued to roll his eyes at me every time he walked by. It was so unprofessional that I will not be coming back here again. It seems to me that a family restaurant like this could do better to hire nicer staff— we all just want to sit and enjoy our food and be taken care of. It’s supposed to be enjoyable. Especially at a family restaurant.

Food was very great. Plenty of bread and olive oil. BYOB, so cost was reasonable.
