Tierney’s Tavern is truly a Montclair institution, as much a part of the town’s identity as its beautiful parks, excellent schools, vibrant shopping, and diverse community. Family-run since 1934 and now in its fifth generation, Tierney’s exudes warmth, tradition, and authenticity. Recognized by USA Today in 2024 as one of America’s best bars, it also happens to serve some of the best food anywhere. The hamburgers are simply the best I’ve ever eaten, the pastrami sandwiches unforgettable, the chicken salad incomparable, and the French fries, franks, and onion rings consistently excellent. Add to that the joy of outdoor dining and the lively upstairs music scene, with great local bands the first Friday of every month, and you have a place that defines Montclair. Since moving here in 1978, Tierney’s has been one of my most beloved gathering spots.

My friends heard about Tierneys and told me to meet them there. When I stepped into the bar I noticed that it wasn't very big. Our server was very nice and very helpful. My friends and I ordered some beers and some wings. I asked for a miller lite and got a Budweiser instead(no big deal). Our server then brought out the wings and I was disappointed. There were very small and didn't have a lot of flavor at all and were way overpriced. The food is not very good but the service is good and the people are nice but I would not get the food.

Dark and jovial. The food was really delicious and the bartender was generous. It’s obviously family owned & operated since forever. Good energy in there makes you want to nod at everyone. I had the pastrami & my dad had the burger and we both were very happy.
