Swahili Village Newark Reviews
Visited on New Year’s Day 2026 for brunch.
This was my first time at Swahili Village. My friends and I were coming from New York, so I called multiple times in advance to confirm the rules for brunch and to let them know we might arrive close to the reservation time due to traffic. The hostess, Efy, was pleasant and reassured us several times that we would still be fine for brunch when we arrived.
We got there at 3:30pm for a 3:45pm reservation, paid at the door (including...read full review
Fantastic food, good service. I highly recommend this place.
We went there as a graduation treat. The staff should have been well prepared knowing that this is graduation season. Once seated the staff kept us waiting for water of all things in addition to drinks ordered.
The seated wait was too long and it seems that the staff forgot some of the tables they were supposed to be waiting on.
The food was great, but the overall service was poor and the restaurant seemed short staffed.

Swahili Village Newark offers a lively atmosphere with delicious traditional food and good music. The restaurant serves vegetarian and vegan options, including lentils with collards and Ugali. Guests can enjoy good music, cocktails, and a lively setting. Parking is available within a short walking distance. The service is warm and attentive, and the food features a fusion of Indian and African flavors. The grilled meats, especially the goat, and the creamed coconut spinach are highly recommended. The restaurant is conveniently located across the street from NJPAC, making it a great option for those attending a show.
Customers praise the fantastic food and excellent customer service. The receptionist is very welcoming and personable, while the waiter is patient and attentive. The beef is said to be really nice and juicy, though the jollof is not the same as the West African version. Customers appreciate the flavorful and fresh food, as well as the good drinks. The small platter is described as immaculate, with the owner personally ensuring guests are having a great time. The steak and goat are noted as the juiciest ever, retaining flavor and tenderness even after reheating. The food is different but outstanding, with strong, great drinks and flavorful dishes. The only downside mentioned is the very loud music on weekends. Overall, it is a highly recommended spot for a fun and tasty experience near NJPAC.
