as much as i love the food and the experience, the staff are very rude. i understand working in food service and dealing with rude customers can take a toll on someone, but there is no need to give an attitude when i ask politely about wanting accommodations. the lady in the front shouldn't roll her eyes and walk away mid-conversation when i ask about wanting a table away from people (which i mentioned would be okay if i couldn't get the table as well.) the food is amazing, though. absolutely delicious, it's just unfortunate how impolite the staff can act.

They genuinely looked so annoyed while taking our order and we felt very rushed. They do this on purpose by not providing a paper menu to write our order on like at other hotpot/bbq places, or even a tablet to order from. So you feel rushed and not order as much. Then they brought the wrong order even though I said what I wanted multiple times. And when they came to change the bbq hot plate, they slammed it so hard and left, we were both shocked and it hurt our ears.
Then at the end they have the nerve to complain about how much tip we left with an innocent tone “service not good?”… yikes. Like, no, service actually wasn’t that good but also tips are 100% optional. It’s sad that the owner does not pay them a decent living wage to where they have to depend on pressuring people for tips even though they don’t exactly deserve it. We should not be forced to pay for someone’s salary if we are not their employer.
& it’s already expensive as it is. We don’t go there everyday, it’s a treat and if you can afford to pay a lot of tips, good for you. Not everyone can justify throwing money like that. Tip culture is so toxic sometimes. Restaurant owners, do better. 3 stars because we still enjoyed our meal & ice cream, though shrimp dumplings are a risk, many times they’ve tasted expired.

I always leave this place feeling properly stuffed lol This is my spot, I take my besties here when it's time to treat them to something special, yummy, and filling! Read somewhere here about someone not wanting to pay for their child's meal - lame! I just won't tolerate any slander here because I'm a regular and I don't give the staff issues. I know the staff to be attentive and kind. Their bbq pork and their beef is a must try! I find their broth to be delicious and healing. As a woman who loves soup all year long, I hold this restaurant dearly in my heart - I truly appreciate and enjoy that I can basically make my own soup. Ugh, I'm almost afraid to leave a 5 star review because this place gets packed enough as it is.

I was extremely disappointed with my visit to Van Yun Hot Pot & BBQ. We were a party of six, and from the moment we arrived, the service was slow and inattentive. To make matters worse, I found hair in two of the meat items I ordered — completely unacceptable for any restaurant, let alone one where you’re cooking the food yourself right at the table.
When I mentioned it to the waitress, it seemed as if they didn’t care. I asked for our meals to be comped, but they said they could not do it because the manager was not there. They only removed one person’s cost from the bill — despite all six of us being affected.
Needless to say, we all left hungry. This was my first time here, and I regret not going with my gut and sticking to my original hot pot spot, K Pot in Kearny, which has always been clean, fresh, and consistent. Sadly, Van Yun did not meet even the most basic standards for cleanliness or customer service. I will not be returning.

Place looks like it is closed on the outside, the inside is decent but there is no privacy between tables. We were asked for our drinks and that was the last full conversation we had during our visit. No one came to check on our table, we had to flag someone down to change our grill after 40 minutes of grilling. No one offered to replace our soup base and we never got our drinks refilled the entire hour+ we were there. We had no idea they had a sauce set up until we asked for a fork 45 minutes into our stay and the woman who originally brought our drinks pointed to the back wall hidden behind the kitchen area. Kpot is our go-to spot but we decided to try something new, I don't think we will return to this location.

The workers rushed us, gave us the bill while we were eating when we didn’t ask for it since we were not done. The service was horrible, and the girls were showing attitude. As we left they ran outside to my car saying we have to tip it’s required, I said it’s not required because it says suggested tips. After that, we gave tips so they would leave us alone and the only answer we got was “that’s it”. This behavior is absolutely unacceptable.

I was so surprised because i had never seen a waitress running outside to get a tip. I didn’t say anything because I was still shocked. So, I tipped her, and she just said, “That’s it.” It was both funny and crazy at the same time. My friend was like it says suggest tip so we can tip however much we want, and that’s what we did.
