Sad for the closing, one of the best dinners is south jersey. Food, staff was great

I've been going here since I was a kid, in the 60's, and always looked forward to eating there. I even remember the original Penn Queen Diner sign that had little mechanical hula dancers, on top of a rotating crown, lit up with neon & small flashing light bulbs. It's been an iconic landmark, with great food and service, in Pennsauken for a little over a half a century (yep, that makes me feel old.) I've been here about 2 or 3 times the past 6 months, or so. I'm not sure what's going on with this place, and it's a damn shame. I understand the pandemic crushed business for a while. But right now, every other diner and restaurant in the area is thriving and are always packed with patrons. This place seems to be struggling and hasn't bounced back. You can feel the negative atmosphere as soon as you walk in. It used to be a fun, energetic, "happy you're here" feeling when you stopped in to grab a bite. Now it's like dreadful and uncomfortable. The maintenance has gone downhill. The bakery cases, which were always full with their legendary cakes & baked goods are barely stocked. It's dirty looking. It smells dirty when you walk in. It has sort of an old bleach scent, trying to cover up the stink of an old food smell. The rest room, which was always spotless, smells like urine and doesn't seem to get cleaned as much as it used to. The back dining area has always been closed the times I've been there, and is looking more like a storage area. There's ripped up seat cushions in some of the booths in the original dining area & and seating that looks like it's been halfway dismantled next to that entrance. The last time I was there, about a month ago, there was only one waitress on the floor, and she seemed to be very stressed, but somehow maintained to keep a smile on her face. I actually felt really bad for her. It has me wondering if the owner has updated the pay scale to keep up with the times and attract/keep employees, or if employee hours have been drastically cut to save a couple bucks. The Penn Queen has always been well staffed. It's never had staffing issues before. This place used to have happy waitresses who worked there for decades, so this is a first. The hours aren't accurate on Yelp. I wanted to stop in last week, a little after 6pm, and the diner was closed. On here it says the hours are 8am to 8pm. I just recently saw on their website, they are closing at 4pm now, except for Saturdays, 6pm. I'm not sure why they to cut off the dinner crowd with these new hours. It just doesn't make sense. No one wants to order a heavy chicken parm dinner for breakfast or lunch. Unfortunately, the locals, who have contributed greatly to the diners success since the 60's, aren't talking too highly about the present state of the diner, and it's not good. I hope we don't lose this landmark with the way it's been operating the past couple of years. It would be a HUGE loss for Pennsauken. Edit: Hey Bradley, I pointed out all of your "shortcomings" in the review. Instead of wasting time leaving snarky comments, wouldn't it be beneficial to the business if you spent that time correcting it's issues? Using COVID as an "excuse" for a failing business, when everyone else is booming, will only last for so long...Is it COVID's fault there's ripped seat cushions, stressed employees, and dirty restrooms? It's been two years now and the COVID "excuse" is getting old.

It was horrible I had wire inside my chicken Parm the silverware were dirty as well as the plates. It must be new owners I will never go back there. The waiter Christine dismissed are presence as if we were not sitting there waiting on our order to come out. It was a three people in there , and when a white couple came in she totally ignored our presence there, I keep calling her and laso put my hand up in jesters by no response she even sat down and had a whole conversation with the couple as if we didn't matter. Worse service ever. They need to close down this place or get new owners that care about all races. I said what I said. If the true hurts it is what it is. Don't go there horrible. The owner was no better no compassion for customers that patronize your business.

I only eat breakfast once a week and it is prepared typically by me. I ordered pancakes and bacon. Pancakes were cold and bacon hard. I paid and left a nice tip as the server was pleasant and friendly. Will not go back.

I have Breakfast at Penn Queen almost every day. The breakfast is always great. Kim goes above and beyond to make everyone feel welcome and Nicole is always pleasant. I highly recommend going to Penn Queen

Lol. I dont know if i should laugh or cry. My husband and I used to be huge fans of Penn Queen. Prime rib was our favorite. Then about 7 months back we showed up for dinner and were told ( we dont carry any more prime rib due to its price) we left and hoped one day they would bring it back. Today I decided to go again. No prime rib again so I ordered a stake and shrimp meal. And my sister in law also order the same. 15 minutes later we were told, (we are sorry we dont have any steaks can we offer you a burguer or something) if I wanted a burguer MC donald would have been a better choice. But any ways I asked what items from the menu were actually available and the lady responded everything else. So again i asked for the Menu and order a salmon with broccoli, match potatoes and the fried crabcake. Quickly after the lady responded ( I am sorry, we dont have any crab meat either. Its too expensive. ) So in the end I just got the terrible tiniest piece of salmon. Check the size of the lemon wedge next to the salmon piece. No flavor at all, runny boxed match potatoes and boiled broccoli. I hope this Dinner didnt apply for an SBA LOAN. Because they have purposely ruin this bussiness not covid. Dont go here its a waste of time and food is now terrible.

Was sat next to a leak in the ceiling that they clearly knew about since there were ceiling tiles removed and a wet spot on the floor. It was actively dripping while we ate. I didn't want to ask to be moved, but by the time the food came out, I'd wished I had.Server didn't tell us her name, forgot creamers for our coffee, forgot straws, and then forgot straws again after I asked. Never got straws. Then when we clearly had leftovers (3 massive pancakes and hash browns), the server came and dropped our check on the table and just said "you can pay up front". We had to wait 5mins til she reappeared to ask for a box. She was nice, just not very good at her job.The place is so beat up inside and looks half closed. The food was good but the experience was awful.I was there 2-3 years ago and enjoyed it, but it has changed.

Used to be a regular until it changed ownership. Just not the same. Last week a sign was on door saying close at 4pm all week. The reason: Cook that makes the sauces was on vacation and no one else has been trained, smh. Chairs stacked in dining area. Hostess, who has been there for years looked miserable. I guess the twin brothers grew tired of running the place. Time to hang up the aprons and turn out the lights.

The table was still dirty.. the lady that seated us had to re clean it while we stood there.. the spoon to stir my coffee was filthy. I ended up using the butter knife. The orange juice that I ordered I had to ask the waitress 4 times then she she stated it's at the other side . And then wen she finally brought it she slammed it down and spilled it but she didn't care to clean that up either she just kept on walking . She seemed annoyed at this point .. so no need to drink it.I gave 2 stars ? because the food was good

The food is usually great, but lately the service has been lacking. When I put my order in, the woman on the phone either seemed stressed or had too much going on. When I picked up my food, the Reuben sandwich was fine, but lacked dressing. Hope they get their quality up.
