It’s very cute & vibrant space with upscale Mexican dining.
We tried following dishes- 1. guac+chips - 8/10 (chips are yummy) 2. Veg tostadas - perfect crunch and fully loaded 9/10 3. Veg enchiladas with green sauce and red sauce(this is too spicy). - 7/10 4. Tres leches cake - really rich cake. A bit too sweet but yummy 8/10 5. churros - two warm churros comes with a side of vanilla ice cream scoop and caramel dipping - 7/10
I want to start off by saying that I love Mexican food but this place is not it. The burrito I had was mediocre and over priced! I should've went to the other little Mexican spot up the road that probably would've been 10x better.

Love me some Azteca! BYOB makes all more fun when coming here. Load up on good food and get some marg mixers and have an amazing time! This place has killer food. Everything from the tostones and guac to the bowls, burritos and quesadillas are all amazing here. My personal favorite is the Steak Nachos. I can't come here and not order some for the table! The birria here is also good!

I don't usually write reviews but this place deserves a good one. Everytime my wife and I visit here, it's always good vibes. The staff is friendly and helps you customize your order according to your likes. The food tastes consistently great each time. And since we're vegetarians, all of their options are veg customizable friendly. Definitely recommend 10/10.

Food was under salted and bland. I ordered carnitas, lengua, and carne tacos. Lengua was the only good one, how do you mess up carne asada?
Also no complimentary chips and salsa? Thats a first. 6$ per taco but you can’t serve free chips like every other restaurant in NJ?
Also they charge 3% for paying with a card. Why does the customer have to pay for your credit card reader fee? No one asked you to sign a contract with toast.

I dont have a problem with the staff, I have a problem with the owner. I should’ve gone to La Fortaleza

Food was delicious! Al pastor tacos are extremely spicy, so keep that in mind. My favorite was the carnitas taco. Also ordered Tostones with Guacamole which was amazing. Definitely recommend! I wish there was music, it would have made the atmosphere a little nicer

My brother's been a chef all of his life. There was a time back in our mid to late twenties where he worked in a pub where he used to make chicken chimichangas. (Probably my most favorite food ) Fast forward 30 years, I had yet to find a place that could make one that was as good as his. Azteca in Rutherford is it! I ordered this chicken chimichanga fried with extra sour cream and salsa verde and it is fantastic! I have not ever eaten in the restaurant so I cannot comment on those items. I also have tried their burritos and they are equally as delicious. Definitely authentic Mexican food. I would highly recommend to try even if you're out of town!

This used to be our go-to Mexican restaurant in Rutherford. We celebrated multiple birthdays here and recommended it often, which makes this review disappointing to write.
Over the past four months, the quality has noticeably declined. The food is now bland and lacks the authentic Mexican seasoning that once set this place apart. Unfortunately, the flavors are so muted that it feels more like institutional food than a Mexican restaurant.
We’ve also noticed consistency issues with ingredients. The avocados are often not fresh, and the birria is especially disappointing—served in very small portions, barely recognizable as birria, with a consommé that is overly watered down and lacks depth.
I truly hope management takes a close look at what’s happening in the kitchen and makes the necessary changes. This restaurant used to be excellent, and I genuinely hope it can return to the quality and authenticity it once had.
