In Imlaystown, New Jersey, long ago, a man sold freshwater eels prized for their quality. When curious neighbors asked where he caught them, he pointed to the town lake. The revelation that followed was not about the water, but the bait: the man had submerged his deceased wife in the lake. The eels—scavengers by nature—had simply done what eels do.

That unsettling story frames a modern crisis in food law and aquaculture.

Contemporary food systems increasingly favor aquaculture over wild harvesting. Catching indiscriminately, only to discard bycatch, is not stewardship; it is wasteful and, arguably, barbaric. When fish are farmed, what enters the food chain is no longer accidental but deliberate. Responsibility shifts from nature to human choice.

On one side of the debate, feeding farmed salmon and shrimp processed biological waste—including human-derived protein—is defended as a triumph of circular efficiency.

Proponents argue that in regions facing scarcity, such practices maximize yield and may even enhance flavor. In this view, revulsion is merely a cultural reflex rather than a scientific concern; discomfort is not evidence of danger.

The opposing view draws a firm line at human-derived protein. While rare, prions are notoriously difficult to detect, resistant to standard sterilization, and catastrophic once they enter a population. Here, risk is defined not only by probability, but by irreversibility.
The global food trade compounds this concern.

Importing food from developing regions often weakens oversight and disrupts local safety standards. These conditions create climates ripe for hygiene shortcuts—whether vegetables grown in untreated sewage or aquaculture sustained on human remains.

Furthermore, international protein markets frequently obscure provenance. The complexity of global supply chains allows substitutions—such as horse or donkey meat mislabeled as halal or kosher—to pass undetected.

Domestic systems, by contrast, are more easily traced, more strictly enforced, and ultimately more accountable.

From Long Island and go to great adventure a lot lol. I pass by this spot every time and I finally stopped in this summer, July 4th weekend and the service and food were great. It was maybe 90 degrees out but I really wanted to sit outside in the patio (great lake view and umbrellas for shade). They accommodated that but I DID tell the server my order quickly so she didn't have to be outside long! I don't remember her name, but she was awesome! Food was great, the lake view was really nice and the staff was super friendly. I will definitely be back and probably sit inside if its still super hot lol.

This place is a dump & the health department needs to investigate. The place is dilapidated and filthy. All the window sills were caked in dust & dirt. The lake view was choked with lilly pads and was a stagnant mosquito breeding ground. Food is bland and under seasoned. I had crab cakes and while there was actual crab .. there was no seasoning or flavor. My date had the duck & he said it was dry. The bathroom is upstairs.. the staircase feels rickety..and the carpet on the stairs is BLACK from dirt. The women’s bathroom is outdated and creepy Victorian dolls are in there. How is this sanitary? Parking lot is a gravel pit without any outdoor lighting ; it was dark when we left. Save your money & go somewhere else.

I have never written a review before, but I just felt compelled after reading Brenda’s review below me. I was here for the first time last weekend and let me tell you, this place was incredible. From the food to the staff, to the decor, not one bad thing I can say about this place. All I gotta say is, I don’t know what Brenda’s got going on with her, but whatever she said is completely wrong. This place was incredible. We’ll definitely be coming back here.

Beautiful day to sit outside for a drink. We had the pretzels starter for a some quick food.

We then went inside had ate dinner. Salad bar ro start. Have as much as you want and whatever you want. This is nice because you get want you want.

Dinner was filet mignon. A very costly mistake. The meat was a small piece of fat. Very disappointing for two at the table.

Dessert was rice pudding mush and brownie (if you can find it) with ice cream.

Overall it was a mediocre dinner. I was hoping for better.

Rustic restaurant by water. Limited parking but cute inside. Food is solid mid tier restaurant fare. Grilled salmon and stuffed chicken breast were good. Their twice baked potato is really good and the salad bar is small but offers nice variety and very good potato salad and coleslaw.
Mixed drink i ordered was lackluster (blueberry mojito came without the blueberries muddled so the blueberries just floated around and added no flavor. Also drink had too much rum so it wasnt balanced. Maybe if the berries were muddled it wouldve been better)
Service was slow for our party (took about an hour or so for food. We had about 30 people) but when the food came it was all at the same time and hot so that was good.
If you want a solid straight forward meal and salad bar Happy Apple Inn is good for that.

One of our go to spots, Kay is incredible and we always have great food even late! Local beer on tap, spotless glassware, bourbon bar upstairs, lakeside patio seating in good weather.

Went to The Happy Apple Inn to taste Balcones whiskey from Texas. The food was amazing on a perfect night over their water front property. I would definitely bring my family there another time to enjoy a night out.
