I really enjoyed visiting this restaurant. We took a tour with Georges tours NL and he brought us here at part of our tour. The fish and chips were the best I have ever eaten. They were crispy without a greasy feel. This is a local restaurant. It is not fancy but the service was very friendly and the restaurant was clean.

The food was absolutely delicious! Had the fish and chips and double cheese burger! Absolutely phenomenal! The staff were also super friendly, the outdoor seating area was very nice with the perfect view of bell Island! Would highly recommend 👌

Cash only, average price, counter service with food brought to the table, good location, quality and portions are reasonable. Crowded on nice days at mealtimes.

The fish is battered with a lighter batter, akin to tempura, in contrast to the somewhat more robust batter typically seen locally. I have eaten here between 7-10 times and it's usually excellent. One day the oil wasn't hot enough or something and the batter was a little oily. On the best days, imo, the batter is crisp and light.

As other restaurants we visited, food is dry and bland. Whoever are the people that gave high ratings for most restaurants on the island clearly never left it nor explored the world. Very disappointed in our gourmet experience in St. Johns and area.

Stopped in at By the Beach in St. Philip’s and it did not disappoint! The fish and chips were absolutely delicious—crispy, fresh, and perfectly cooked. The clubhouse was also top notch, packed with flavour and generous portions. And whatever you do, don’t forget to add the fries dressing and gravy—it takes everything to the next level. A great spot by the water that I’ll definitely be visiting again!

The Beach Fish and Chips is a true Newfoundland gem! Located right on the water in Portugal Cove, it’s the perfect place to enjoy classic fish and chips with an unbeatable sunset view.

The fish was crispy on the outside, flaky on the inside, and the fries were golden and delicious—exactly what you’d hope for from a local fish and chip shop. You can taste the freshness in every bite.

One important tip: they only accept cash, so make sure to bring some with you. It’s a simple setup, but the food and the view make it a memorable stop.

Highly recommend grabbing a meal here and enjoying it by the water as the sun goes down. A peaceful, authentic Newfoundland experience!

This was the first place I stopped when landing in St Johns
They have the best fish and chips by the ocean
The portions are large, my surprise was the fries come with dressing mmmmmmmm
The servers are very friendly and helpful
Parking was easy to access
If I didn’t know a local I’m not sure if I would have even known about this hidden gem

I came in looking for soup or chowder...
But I discovered it's basically a fish and chips shop. Excellent in its genre!
I ordered one piece of fish with fries. I got a large fillet (about half a cod) and generous portions of fries and gravy.
We watched the sunset on the bay while we ate ❤️

Fish n chips are amazing. The batter is light and the fish pieces are large.
Service is typical for a place like this...friendly staff. Beautiful view of Bell Island. We came here in December so not many tourists. If you have a vehicle this is the place to try...other places in St.John's are second place to here!
And know the Newfie way to have fish n chips is with dressing n gravy so ask for that on the side to try it
