I came in looking for soup or chowder...
But I discovered it's basically a fish and chips shop. Excellent in its genre!
I ordered one piece of fish with fries. I got a large fillet (about half a cod) and generous portions of fries and gravy.
We watched the sunset on the bay while we ate ❤️

Fish n chips are amazing. The batter is light and the fish pieces are large.
Service is typical for a place like this...friendly staff. Beautiful view of Bell Island. We came here in December so not many tourists. If you have a vehicle this is the place to try...other places in St.John's are second place to here!
And know the Newfie way to have fish n chips is with dressing n gravy so ask for that on the side to try it

MOST EXCELLENT fish and chips with a gorgeous view out onto Portugal Cove. Husband and I were just staying in Portugal Cove on a recent trip to Newfoundland. Our BnB was so close to this place we had to give it a try. We agreed, we had never had such amazing fish and chips. Owners told us to try it the Canadian way—with gravy and dressing on the fries. We are from the States and didn't know this was a thing, but decided to try it. WOWWWW was it amazing. The dressing gave the fries an herby flavor, the gravy was rich and tasty. I also got peas on mine. The star, though, was the fish! They explained that it was caught just out in the bay that morning. It was the freshest tasting cod and the batter was the lightest and crispiest I'd ever tasted. Holy cow! It was DELICIOUS! As we drove all over the Avalon Peninsula, all locals we chatted with said, "You have to go to By The Beach fish and chips! It's the best!" The owner was very chatting and friendly and was so excited for us to try it like a Newfoundlander would eat it. Go and give this place a try. We loved it so much we went twice during our week there!

The worst burgers we have ever had. We are not even sure what type of hamburger meat it was but, it didn't look good -the color and texture of the meat was off and it tasted worst then it looked. I think it maybe source from a local farm maybe??? Also, you have to pay by cash which in this day and age is ridiculous 🙄 As well no waitress to seat you or take your order. You have order at the counter by looking at the giant menu on the wall. Sorry we were not impressed and will not be not be back.

My hands down go to for fish and chips. If the fish was any fresher, it'd be flapping.

Four of us came here for dinner about a week ago. The staff were friendly and the banter was fun. We asked for an empty table to cleared on the deck, but after waiting and waiting...we finally cleared it ourselves. Eventually, we asked a passing server to wipe it off for us.
Based on the glowing reviews, 3 of us ordered the fish and chips and we were all very disappointed with it. Perhaps we should have taken a hint from the half-finished plates of fish and chips on the table we ended up sitting at.
The fourth person ordered a burger and said it was the worst she had ever had, although her husband thought it was fine.
The view of the sunset from the deck was delightful, but I definitely would not go back.

A local friend took us to this restaurant that is literally by the beach overlooking the Atlantic Ocean (well a cove of it) and the view was amazing. I have never had such light and tasty fish and chips. The batter was so light that you could easily cut it with a plastic spoon. The portions are generous and the price is reasonable for the quality and portions you're getting. The service is also really good. We got our food quickly. This is such a great gem. I would definitely come back when I visit St. John's again. Expect long line ups during tourist season, but we were there at end of Sept and plenty of seats. Regardless it's worth the wait.

I LOVE this place, no other fish and chips in NL compared, the batter is light and crispy and not heavy (think the opposite of a traditional English fish and chip, where the batter is doughy and dense).
My only complaint is that this place needs a serious serious deep clean, the floors are always greasy, the tables are greasy, the walls haven't been painted in a decade or more, and don't even talk about the state of the kids high chairs, it's borderline unsanitary.
Whoever owns this place needs to crack down on the daily, weekly and monthly cleaning operation.
I'll still go and support this business, the food is just devine
