My husband and I took family visiting here from BC to be screeched in. Worst experience ever. Actually terrible!!! Bartender loud and obnoxious kept repeating one line jokes. The place could do with a good cleaning .. paid $65 for two screech in’s and 1 very warm beer. Debit machine never works apparently ..cash only ATM machine in the corner. . Thought it would be a nice thing to do for our first
Time visitors but still shaking my head on that one.
We got screeched in here and it was amazing 😂 Jack did it for us and we had the best time! Couldn’t recommend it enough!

I attended this location with my family to be screeched in. The bartender was friendly and humorous. I received a certificate and took away great memories. Thanks for laughs and a lovely experience.

Don’t even want to give a star. This guy at the door was so ignorant and unprofessional for an establishment. Sad.

This place was great for getting the traditional NFLD Screeched In ceremony. We had the best time! Our bartender/master of ceremonies greeted us at the door because he had noticed us walk by a few times and made us feel comfortable right away. He was very easy to chat with and accommodated my friend who does not drink alcohol without any shame. The ceremony itself was very fun and without too many crazy bells and whistles. A local offered to film our Screeching In and joined us for conversation afterwords ,adding to our wonderful experience. If you are looking for a casual atmosphere with genuine people this is your place! Thanks Zac for making us official Newfoundlanders, we look forward to visiting the next time we are on the Island!

We kissed the cod at Trapper John's. Best entertaining and educational experience and now we are honorary Newfoundlanders. Special pub and welcoming owner.

This bar is an absolute gem! Trapper John’s has a cozy, antique charm that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a piece of Newfoundland history. The owner is incredibly welcoming and takes the time to share fascinating stories about the island’s culture and traditions. It’s the perfect place to experience a classic Newfoundland screech-in—and trust me, you don’t want to miss that! If you’re downtown St. John’s, make your way to George Street and get yourself to Trapper John’s. It’s not just a bar—it’s a rite of passage.

Oh, me nerves, what a riot at Trapper John’s in St. John’s! This place is like a Newfoundland fever dream—part pub, part museum, all shenanigans. The Screech-In ceremony? Pure, unfiltered hilarity! Our barman, Bobby, had us in stitches, spinnin’ yarns about cod and rum like a salty pirate comedian. Kissin’ that frozen cod (thank the lord it was frosty, not fishy) felt like smoochin’ a popsicle with a grudge, and downin’ that Screech rum? Let’s just say it’s like garglin’ molasses with a kick! The whole crowd was roarin’—20 of us “come-from-aways” chantin’ Newfie phrases and tryin’ not to choke on our “Newfie steak” (spoiler: it’s bologna). The bar’s a bit rough ‘round the edges, but that’s the charm—like yer nan’s attic but with better drinks. Trapper’s got history, heart, and a homemade beer pong table to boot. If you’re in St. John’s and skip this, you’re missin’ a proper laugh and a certificate to prove you’re an honorary Newfie. Long may yer big jib draw

I really appreciated them doing the screech in for me in the middle of the night. They were super welcoming and it was way less crowded than other spots. Bonus they had my hockey game on the tv! Maybe I had a better experience than others, but I found nothing offensive about the staff and the way they interacted with me.
A must go if you aren't easily offended. The bar was empty, so we were afforded a great time with Trapper Bobby!

Girlfriend and I went to trapper john’s to get screeched in, trapper bobby told non stop jokes and threw a couple insults our way but it’s all part of the experience. It was very authentic and it was clear the bartender has lived a full life, as he told us his life story after getting screeched in. He bought us shots on the house before we left, very nice guy, just trying to make everybody smile in his own way. If you get offended easily, don’t go here. If you can take a bit of heat and want to smile and laugh, spend some time here.

This place is one of a kind. If you like dives this is the place to go. LOL !!!
Getting "Screehed in" was not as advertised to me. Certificate is all about Trapper Johns, not being an honorary Newfoundlander. Trapper Bobby was rude and crude, and when told his remarks were offensive, he doubled down. This was BEFORE the screeching in, which was expected to be ribald, so you can imagine how bad it was.
