Unfortunately, my latest experience at PJ and B's Rio Cafe was not great. The food quality was underwhelming and it was served on flimsy Styrofoam plates with even more flimsy plastic utensils. The service was good, but nothing that exceeded my expectations.
The atmosphere was a complete disappointment. In the past, I've commented positively about the atmosphere and the awesome location of PJ&B's and I've recommended it to others for those reasons. I chose to eat there in early December because of the desirable atmosphere. However, despite it being within the Christmas holiday season, there were minimal holiday decorations and no holiday music playing. Instead, the kitchen staff were blaring some obnoxious music that made me want to leave as quickly as possible, which is exactly what I did. I doubt this is the last time I'll visit PJ and B's, but I can't recommend it to others based on my latest experience.

The food is very tasty, but their hot chocolate sucks, it's too watered down.

A Cuban sandwich does not have mayonnaise. It also has pickles and mustard, which this one didn't. It was a ham, pork and mayo sandwich for $13.25. We didn't want fries, but the price was the same.
While we waited for our food (which I saw on counter behind the workers), all 4 of the girls behind the counter played on their phones and gabbed. Food got cold before I asked about our order.
There was also no organization about whose order was what. Just random cups of coffee, espresso, etc. set out on the counter.
I doubt we will go back.

Very good!
Stayed near Carlsbad for 10 days... ate here 7 days and tried a variety of items.
Everything is home made except the steak fingers n fries were frozen.
Great place to eat or take out!

Had the Dare Devil burrito. The best brisket burrito I've ever had. The ring of fire hot sauce is the bomb!

Dined with four people and everyone loved their food. I personally had the French roast, 1 egg, sausage, and potatoes and the portions were extremely generous!
It’s counter service, so if that bothers you, now you know! (But hey, you save some money on the tip.) If I HAD to find a minor quibble, I’m not a fan of styrofoam plates, but I’ll overlook that for a truly great breakfast!

there’s a reason why this place is the first to pop up when you look up “best breakfast near me” in Carlsbad.
