I first experienced the Old Toad Restaurant when l was 17 years old. We had just moved from El Paso to Bent, NM. I was starting my senior year in high school in Tularosa. The owner of the ranch my step father worked for asked if l knew how to wait tables. In fact l did. Henry, Maria and l ran the restaurant my entire senior year. My mom even baked the pies and helped in the kitchen. I learned how to make salsa and red chile. This was 44 years ago
Great food
This is a secret place that you’ll only know about if a friend told you! It’s so hidden that it’s difficult to find. But, the locals seem to know the spot well! Their food is so delicious it’s like a taste of a home cooked meal. Their chips and salsas is to die for!
Old Road Restaurant in Mescalero serves authentic New Mexican cuisine. Their red and green chile is hot, delicious, and reminiscent of home. The green salsa and queso are excellent, and the prices are reasonable. Customers have noted that the food is awesome, with great flavor and fairly large portions. The famous Old Road Combination Plate is a must-try, and the restaurant has plenty of space for large groups. The service is good, and the restaurant and restroom are clean. With nice views and easy access off the main highway, it is a favorite spot for both locals and visitors. There’s parking out front and also a parking lot to the left.
