Modern General Feed & Seed

Cute place with a creative menu but I can't get past the watery coffee and under seasoned food. Brewed coffee is weak af and they regularly burn milk on lattes. For being one of the most expensive coffee/ breakfast spots in Santa Fe, it just doesn't cut it for me. It has a lot of potential, I hope they can figure it out.

Very aesthetic atmosphere but the service is HORRIBLE. The staff is always extremely unfriendly and unwelcoming.

This was my third visit to Modern General and will be my last. I ordered the bell pepper pancakes with salmon and an egg on top for breakfast before work. I enjoyed the meal but was vomiting within two hours of eating there. It has been decades since the last time I threw up. I called the restaurant to speak to a manager to recommend that they check their food safety and cleanliness standards. The lady who answered the call took my number and said there is no manager on duty and that she would have the manager call me. I never heard back from them.
As a certified food handler and member of the local food scene, I found this to be truly unprofessional. The worst part is that my boss had the same experience two times in a row ten years ago and has also never returned. Something needs to change. I rarely find the need to write a review like this, I hope it helps keep others safe.

I do like the atmosphere here, it is quite nice to sit and eat or enjoy a coffee in this space. Bright and lots of charm. But the prices here are high, even for Santa Fe. If I'm being honest, I don't feel I've ever paid so much for so little. The fact that the kitchen closes two hours before the store does is also a bit odd, so be prepared for that. Finally, as others have noted, the service is not particularly warm or friendly. This has been the case on multiple visits. I know being in service is tough, but when it's a pattern, I wonder if management isn't treating staff well or what else might be going on. In any case, all these factors make me unable to recommend it at this time, despite the fact it's a lovely space. I wish them the best and hope management takes a closer look.

The staff is not welcoming at all, they always seem annoyed to serve you even though it’s literally what they are paid to do.
I always end up feeling kinda ill after eating there too. This is my 3rd time eating there and my last.

Got the special- two beef sliders. Don’t bother - meat was like rubber (oddly dense) and completely inedible. Servers didn’t care and dismissed our criticism- even though we didn’t eat more than a bite. You’d think that would be a clue that it really was bad. Food at this place is so hit or miss; sometimes tasty and sometimes awful.

So we are from out of town and whenever we come into Santa Fe, we love to stop at Modern General for the cute atmosphere and yummy food. But today was just a drop in for a to go order and I wanted to order the chia seed pudding (which is delicious) and a fresh juice. We got there at 2:34 in the afternoon and they don’t close till 4 so I knew there was plenty of time to order anything off of the menu. But the girl at the register told me that I could not order a juice because she had already cleaned and broken down the machine. I asked politely if she could make one since it wasn’t close to close and she refused. So I just ended up getting the chia seed pudding and we left very disappointed. I would understand if I came in 15 minutes before close but an hour and a half till close and your shutting things down is unacceptable! We definitely will be thinking before we go there again, due to all of the menu items not being available through out the whole day. Unless they ran out of an ingredient which was not the case today.

Ate here for 3 days during my trip. The lemon curd cakes were my favorite. Amazing selection of books! Books + breakfast - what could be better!

We were visiting Santa Fe for the weekend and originally came here because the menu looked like it had some good dairy free pancakes. There wasn't much for dairy free or vegan (although I think they had some gluten free options), but I won't knock Modern General because of my dietary requirements. I had a standard (dairy free) breakfast sando, but it was definitely above standard. The staff was friendly, the shopping was above par for a restaurant/gifts format. I even picked up a book for a Christmas gift and I'm not a spontaneous shopper.

Stopped by at 3:52 with a group of us (four people). We were all shopping independently and actively browsing their interesting but disparate assortment of products. No one said hello or welcome. One of the young woman working there gave us less than five minutes before coming over to say “We are closing in less than three minutes.” Ok. Just so you know that is NOT how you do it. You put up the closed sign and shut the door to discourage new customers but let the people who already had items in their hands finish shopping. Then you let them out. Wow. If I was the owner of this store I would be pretty irritated that four customers and at least $100 in sales walked out the door rather than taking five more minutes to help them shop and ring them up.

I really love this place & the food is wonderful.
Unfortunately the music was so loud & bad the last few times that I went, it changed my whole experience of hanging out there & enjoying some peace, not a great sound vibe.
I so hope they will reconsider what music they play as I’d love to go back- with some quieter & more chill music!
