This restaurant looks like it’s been closed for years.

Awesome flashback diner on RT 66!It doesn’t look flashy, but it makes up for it with great foodYou will step back in time when you go here…when the appeal was good service and great tasting foodHomemade, fresh, huge Chocolate Chip Pancakes. Perfect and tasty bacon. Thick French Toast. Fantastic BLTs. And really large drink glasses. They hit every mark and don’t break the bank. Just go.

What a cute place! We went in with only 45 minutes left before closing (we aren’t local, we drive a truck and were unaware until we pulled up) Usually we get dirty looks if that happens. I told my husband if they seemed upset, we would just get it to-go. When we walked in, we were greeted with a smile and were told to pick a spot. She gladly served us and was so sweet! My husband got the chicken fajita dinner and I asked what she recommended. She said the New Mexico Chile Burger was her favorite. Both were amazing! The burger… oh man. Talk about old fashioned smash burger. It came in a tortilla which I thought was such a cute touch. I haven’t found a place to mold their own hamburger meat in a long time. Everyone uses the pre made patties. This one was hand molded and cooked on flat top and thin…but still juicy! The building is old and full of character but very clean and well taken care of. The staff was 10/5 stars. Absolutely the sweetest people. Prices were extremely reasonable. Highly recommend. Has a small area for a truck or two to park to eat. Will definitely be back for another old fashioned hamburger when we roll through.

My husband and I (drive a truck) came through today and we were so pleasantly surprised. We walked in and the staff was so friendly. I was unsure on what to get, and when asked, the waitress told me her favorite type of burger with chiles on it. I forgot what it was, but it was an old fashioned smash burger, which was delightful and reminded me of my childhood. They just don’t make them like that anymore. This burger came on a tortilla with all the usual veggies and chiles! It was SO stinking good. My husband got the chicken fajita plate and loved it! Prices are quite reasonable and the people that run this cute, little place were so kind and made me feel like I was a local. The way they spoke with their customers made me feel like I was in their kitchen at home visiting a friend. Thank you Sun and Sand restaurant for a great place to eat and the hospitality show everyone. The way you make everyone feel when they walk through the doors is quite rare and it was nice to see. Keep up the amazing work! Can’t wait to come back.

Just mediocre. A roadside dive is what I would call itBetter than greasy fast food.

We ate here for lunch. I'm glad we passed i-40 going east. It's just odd i-40 on the south side of old route 66. It's very close to the blue hole. My wife had the patty melt it was on Rye Bread, a thin hamburger pattie, but excellent flavor. I had the chili rellanos plate 2, which was almost more than I could eat. Egg battered not really crispy but still great lots of cheese. I had the green chili sauce on top, very good, not spicey. The beans were very good, not refried . The rice reminded my wife of her grandmother's Mexican rice. She was very happy. Chips and salsa were fresh. I loved the chunky salsa. We will be back.

We were traveling and stopped for a bite. When we entered the restaurant was pretty busy & the front of the house was very slow. There was a long line to check out. A waitress came over and said she would seat us shortly. We waited 30 minutes, were then seated, and then another employee came over to notify us they were closed. Why did they seat us? Why did they let us stand there for 30 minutes? Not impressed…. The bathrooms were also dirty and out of paper towels.

Since I was kid, my grandfather and I always walked 6 blocks or more on Sundays after church to eat here. Hands down this is the best restaurant in New Mexico. The prices are reasonable, their food is always delicious and consistent, and the staff ensure you feel at home. A Route 66 staple (not many around anymore) that offers authentic American and New Mexico cuisine. If you are passing thru and can't decide where to go in Santa Rosa, and you're lucky enough to find them open, I'd say do yourself favor and stop here. I know all of the family and they are great people! The current waitstaff consists of a three generations of awesome women engrained in the restaurant industry. My favorite meals are the Cheeseburger and homemade fries, 2 rolled beef enchilada plate with red Chile, breakfast burrito smothered with red chili, two green chili relleno plate, chicken strip dinner and of course their two egg breakfast with hash browns and sausage. Thank you Sun N Sand for all the great years!

It is diner style, family owned and a local favorite. It is just too bad the hours are not consistent. That makes it hard to know when to go.
