I really wanted to try this place because Ethiopian food is my favourite. I was not disappointed. The warmth, the good vibes. The food was delightful and the coffee was perfect. Coffee and a meal for two (mixed veggie and meat options) was $40. I live about 1.5hrs drive away, but you better believe I will be stopping by whenever I am in Halifax!

Vegetarian options: Many options.

Parking: A handful of spots, between 5-10.

Kid-friendliness: A family with young kids came in while we were eating lunch and the owners welcomed them with open arms. It was a sweet exchange that brought good vibes to everyone in the restaurant.

I had the pleasure of dining here twice with a dear coworker, and after my first meal, I was completely hooked. The food is absolutely incredible! The Ethiopian dishes are packed with bold, vibrant flavors, striking the perfect balance of savory and spicy. The service is incredibly friendly, and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel right at home. I’m already looking forward to my next visit!

Such a lovely unassuming little spot. The food was fresh and made with pride and love. The owner/chef/waitress gave off such a welcoming presence. Will definitely be returning.

I loved this place! It's a nothing fancy but super cozy and friendly spot. If you like Ethiopian this place is great. The staff were very kind and even brought us a few extras as they had made some special stuff for a celebration. They said they just wanted to share! It was all gluten free and i had no reaction (celiac). If you want a relaxed spot to have some great food that taste like it came from someones kitchen with love this is it!

Dietary restrictions: Gluten free, celiac safe

There's too few African restaurants in this city, and this is one of the top ones. Mama chef has the kindest, warmest welcome and makes the most stellar food. We had the Beyaynetu, which is a platter of injera (tangy crepes), plus an assortment of daal, beetroots, potato curry, beef curry, sautéed kale, and more delicious helpings. This is family style eating at its best. Do not ask for cutlery, there is no forks and spoons foolishness here. Ask mama chef for the spicy achar/pickle, and don't forget to get a pot of coffee or tea. Definitely coming back for more.

Before my review, I offer a tip: When you go, ask for "Combination for <Number of People>". Ethiopian food is at its best when it's shared with friends, and sharing a big platter of Injera bread covered in various meats and dips is one of the most enjoyable experiences in dining. You can trust that whatever they bring you will be great.

Aster Cafe is the best restaurant in Fairview, and maybe all of Halifax. The service is extremely friendly, and the restaurant has a homey atmosphere.
The food is as good as you could ask for from any restaurant, regardless of price or prestige. And speaking of price, what they charge is more than reasonable.
I really have nothing but great things to say about the Aster Cafe.

Vegetarian options: Lots of vegetarian options

Parking: Plenty of parking, it's no problem

The food is awesome, the Owner/chef gives you an almost bespoke experience. She explains the menu, tried to understand your preferences and makes suggestions to the menu.
Food is fresh, the tea is infused with goodness. Both vegetarian and meat options are sumptuous. I will go back next time I am in Halifax. Price is amazing for the quality of food you get.

Such yummy food! I asked for the owner/chef (who had such a kind mom vibe and made you feel like you were being made a hearty and nutritious meal at their home) to make me something spicy and the heat level was perfection! Love the variety of ingredients they use and all the flavours from the mixtures of vegetables, proteins, and spices. In addition, my friend has a garlic allergy so when she called ahead of time to ask about the menu, the chef was so friendly and accommodating and told her to come on by and she cooked a variety plate just for her!

This was my first time having Ethiopian food and it did not disappoint! The atmosphere was cozy, the staff friendly and the food delicious. I am so happy to see more diverse cuisines coming to Halifax and will be returning next time I get a craving for it.
