Having eaten in countless busy places around the world, from big cities like Sydney and NYC to smaller towns in Croatia, I know what a packed restaurant looks like. Black Sheep Restaurant in Halifax was extremely busy when we visited. They gave us a small table for two in a corner. It took about 7 minutes to get the menu and another 10 minutes for someone to take our order.
When our server did come, they were very nice, but clearly running hard because the place was packed. It felt a bit understaffed.
I had the Diner Breakfast with a Propeller IPA beer. The breakfast looked pretty small for the price, which was around $22 USD only 2 eggs, little bacon and two pieces of bread. My fries came with a ketchup-style sauce that had squid ink, which looked fancy and tasted good. I always like trying local beers in Canada, and the Propeller IPA was good. My wife had the tomato soup with a cheese sandwich, which looked huge and she said was very good.
I really liked that they took the time to explain each dish to us before we started eating, that was a nice touch. We spent close to $60 USD for two. I still thought it was a little overpriced for pretty basic plates, one beer, and one coffee.
Starting with the good- general atmosphere is nice (upscale pub vibe), and waiter/serving staff were great. We had oysters, which were quite good. The desert was also well done.
The bad.. As a main I had the steak, which just wasn't good. It was a strip, however it was too thin, and didn't have much flavor. It came with fries and a few vegetables, and was $50. I'm sympathetic to how (financially) challenging it is to run a restaurant these days, but $50 for a poor quality steak and fries is hard to justify. The price of mains is comparable to high end restaurants around the city, however the quality is not on par.
The food was good and the servers were excellent; the green salad and focaccia bread with the blueberry 🫐 lavender jam were the best part of my meal.
Friendly service, fantastic food, and nice casual atmosphere.
I went there with my brother for desert and wine before a concert . The staff is amazing . Our server was great . The atmosphere is ambient and moody . Lovely desert lovey wine .
I will defiantly go there for a full course dinner next time I’m in Halifax
Overpriced small portions.
Service was good but the halibut was dry and very small portion with very little greens maybe had 5-6 beans on a large plate.
Very overpriced for an old pub they slapped some wall paper and paint on.
Was better when it was the Red Stag pub
Atmosphere and staff are great but the food is a disappointment .. portions are small and pricey! Overcooked, small halibut for $40 and a simple poutine had no flavour what so ever.
Very nice place in a nice building. I took the lobster raviolis and enjoyed it a lot. A lot of flavor in this plate.
The plate was big enough for me for a dinner.
The service was good and I will recommend this restaurant for the ravioli.

We came here for dinner on a work trip and it was honestly wonderful! The ambiance of the place is superb, good lighting and the perfect volume. We were seated on the top floor which was perfect for people watching. There was such a nice variety of seating and types of tables. Our food was also amazing, we got oysters, a bread basket, and the lobster rolls. The food was flavorful and the cocktails were creative! Would definitely recommend for a more upscale dining experience.

It’s not every day you experience so many flavours at dinner, and let’s just say I’m speechless. We had the bread and butter compote to start (lemon poppy seed), Fettuccine with scallops and my fiancé had the steak and frites. The only thing I wasn’t obsessed with was how straight the back was on the booth seats but it’s such a minor detail it doesn’t take away from the experience !

My mum had a great brie burger (the fries were fantastic) and I had the tartar, I love ordering it in general but this was honestly as good as the tartar I had a Michelin star restaurant. We will definitely be coming back here again!

Had an amazing time at this place!
Alex was by far the best and most friendly bartender I've had yet in halfiax.
Recommend getting drinks from this guy he really knows his stuff!!
This is really great restaurant that recommended by our insurance carrier Manulife. They hold welcome dinner party here. Food tastes great. Especially the small plates:Seafood Chowder, so good. The waiters and waitress are professional and kind, always check anything needed. Environment is suitable for family, friends or company gathering here. Worthy to try.

Great atmosphere but the food was the worst that I have had on my vacations. The halibut was cooked perfectly so props to that but the rest was absolutely awful, including the lobster roll. Can't complain about the service at all as they were so nice and accommodating and the establishment was very nice. They need a menu change or different chefs.
