Don 88 is a family-owned store that feels like a family-owned store. They're not always open when they say they'll be and they often stay open long after they say they'll be closed. The son who often works there is a bit odd and usually engages in awkward conversation. But if you like these kinds of quirky, one-of-a-kind local independent stores, this is the place for you!

Great place to shop

I'm giving 5 stars for the sole reason that this place has given me a great story. While spending a few weeks in the area a friend and I decided to go into this store the other day out of curiosity, as had been walking past this place every day but never went inside. Upon entering the one employee working that day was sitting on the floor facing a shelf with a saxophone in his lap. The first thing he said was "Why am I sitting on the floor? It's such a nice day outside!" I immediately sensed that my former manager would have highly disproved of his customer service approach. While browsing through the aisles of canned coconut milk and noodles he kept repeating to himself "3 more weeks! 3 more weeks!" When we made it back to the front area of the store he was now standing up with the saxophone and said "3 more weeks until Canada 150! I'm gonna play this thing!" while holding up his saxophone. At this point we had seen enough and didn't want to spend any more time with this guy, so we politely exited the store and as we did this he commented "you didn't buy anything?" Unfortunately he did not play a single note on his sax but I will be thinking of him on Canada Day.

Very rude to their customers. Food is always expired and the store is filthy with mice. The guy at the store likes to play his saxophone a lot but maybe he should consider actually running the business properly instead.

Don 88 is the best Asian grocery in Halifax. Not only that but for students on campus looking for some good food, just ask for dumplings or noodles and they will make it fresh on the spot. Don't sleep on this place dal peeps

They selling expired food and hiding date of manufacture on the food package. They also selling homemade food without license. I highly recommend that do not purchase any food from here.

This is a fun little spot to poke around in, but when it comes to making purchases, I'll stick to somewhere else. The shelves here are coated in dust, and a lot of the products in the front window are sun-faded and ancient. I feel like I'd always find something here to make me smile (On this trip, it was a happy rabbit bowl), but it's never anything special enough to make me want to buy it. I feel like it would just be clutter if I brought it home. The people who run this shop seem nice enough, but they don't really ever acknowledge me. It could be a language barrier, as it's pretty rare to hear English spoken here. They do have sushi for sale, but I don't think I'd ever eat it. There's just too much slacking when it comes to cleaning for me to trust a product like sushi. Pocky? Sure, those suckers come bagged. Mmm.. pocky... Now I'm distracted. Enough said, I suppose.

Don 88 Asian Grocery has the friendliest staff in Halifax! Don himself will make you a wok of noodles and dumplings, and even keep you company while eating them. They also sell yummy 'cookies'. Go in and say hi!
