Everyone is insanely friendly- even the other customers, and especially the regulars. There is frequent live music, and I even tricked my little sister into liking Clamato with their phenomenal virgin Mateus Ceasar! Absolutely recommend for locals and tourists :)

We brought a table of six last Saturday evening, 5:30 reservation. I ordered an appetizer Caesar salad with a side of shrimp. Most of the meals were good but when one of our friends from the USA ordered dessert (cheesecake) he ended up with Franks hot sauce on the side! When our bill was being paid I saw that my appetizer salad with shrimp was $26.00. Very disappointing with the experience.

Came for dinner and didn’t have a reservation but the host was kind enough to double check if there was a spare table. Most other places were closed, closing, or fully booked so it was so nice that they could accommodate. Food and drinks were lovely as well.

Food tasted delicious. Not cheap, but fairly priced for the quality. Service wasn’t well organized. At times we had 3 servers check on us one right after the other. At times no one came. So after our meal, there was a long wait for dessert. Decor was nice and there was a live band out on the patio, but there was a very strong musty smell upon entrance and descent into the lower seating area. The toilet (1) was a bit dingy and not labelled on the door.

Five stars! The location was quaint and right near the water, on the Main Street. Fresh seafood and EXCELLENT steaks. We started with the 3-cheese fondue (a Yugoslavian recipe) and Caesar salads (with the perfect tang of anchovy). Live music on Fridays created the perfect ambience. This is THE PLACE to go in Mahone Bay. PERFECTION! The Noels from New Orleans. August 2024.
Popped in today for Monday night Tapis and it did not disappoint! Always reminded every time we go to Mateus Bistro why we should go more often. 10/10 highly recommend

We went tonight to sit in on a very hot night and discovered their inside was too hot to host guests so we sat on the patio. A few minutes later the place filled up and live music started — it was VERY chaotic and crowded with drunk guests meandering through tables and was not the vibe we were looking for but no big deal, we switched and got our food to go.
It was a special "grill night" and I had the haddock while my partner had the lamb burger. We were at least looking forward to our food as we had heard great things! We were disappointed by the portions and even more by the taste. My haddock was missing the tomato topping and the risotto was completely flavourless. My partner's burger was very small and also quite bland. The kicker - I found not one but TWO hairs in my food!
For a price tag of $78 including tip I am furious about this experience and food. The vibe being not for us would be one thing but the food being terrible and having hair in it is absolutely unacceptable. Hope this was an off night but we certainly will not be back

We stopped in today for the first time and 100% we will be back! I would drive from the city to come eat here :))) The breadsticks and cheese dip were phenomenal and the chicken and pear baguette were to die for. Service was fantastic and the vibe is perfect for mahone bay.
