Though at first, I did not find this visually appealing with the green color. Not sure what that's all about, but it was delicious.

We had read such good reviews of this place, and were excited to try it. But we were disappointed. We asked how spicy they make their food, and we were told they don't put spice into it. We asked about adding our own, and they brought us three different chili sauces to add. The food was okay, but kind of "meh" without any spices. It was hard to figure out how much spice to add on our own. The one very positive is that they are very generous with the protein they add - lots of shrimp, chicken, etc. We tried the pineapple fried rice that was recommended on here, and it was excellent. The pad Thai was okay, and had lots of shrimp, but again, needed some spice added during cooking. I think we'll try it again, but with lower expectations.

As promised, we went back on our last day in Reno. We tried two new dishes and reordered our fav dish at the establishment, the chicken wing appetizer. The wings were consistently good. The pad see ew was very tasty and shrimp was cooked to perfection. Spicy level 3 was still very spicy compared to level 4 of 5 during our last visit so this is not for the faint of heart. Take it with a grain of salt ... we LOVE spicy food. We also had the grilled chicken with spicy sauce but we requested for peanut sauce instead. It is similar to chicken satay, but without the stick. Staff remembers us. While we did not order any dessert, the server did recommend a few popular dessert spots. Needless to say, she had good taste! Read my other review for dessert in Reno!

Great staff and amazing food. The red curry is sooo good. Spice level 2 is perfect with the curry. I'm surprised theres not more people here! I would recommend.

I usually go to Moo Dang for Thai food, but I wanted to try another local Thai place with a wider menu. The Coconut Downtown has a variety of appetizers, curries, and rice and noodle dishes. Our party of three arrived around 1:15 pm on a Sunday and most of the tables were full. The only empty tables needed to be wiped down and they only had one server working so we had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated. Across the three of us, we each got a Thai iced tea, a yellow curry with chicken, a Pad Thai with chicken, and drunken noodles with chicken. All three dishes were delicious. The yellow curry with chicken wasn't as flavorful as other yellow curries I've had in other cities, but it's definitely the best I've had in Reno. The Pad Thai was not as peanuty as other places' Pad Thai, but personally, I prefer it that way. The drunken noodles (my favorite Thai dish) was cooked perfectly and not overly saucey, which I appreciated. We ordered the yellow curry and drunken noodles at a level 3/5 spice and the Pad Thai at a 4/5 spice. We all love spicy food but the difference between the 3 and 4 was quite significant. Overall, I really enjoyed The Coconut Downtown. The prices were very affordable and lower than most other restaurants in Reno. The food was delicious, but as long as you have time to wait due to slow service (at no fault of the employees, they just need more folks working), I would recommend trying The Coconut Downtown!

I tried this restaurant 3 times over the past few years. Each time I went I thought maybe the food would be better, thinking maybe that dish was just "off" that time previously. My most recent visit however will be my last. Out of 3 dishes this visit, only one dish was good and "good" is being just a little generous. But, how my food was handled was the true offender this visit. We saw a waitress (not the one serving us) take an order of Pad Thai to the table next to us. A few minutes go by and our waitress goes to the table, said the other waitress made a mistake, that the Pad Thai was not theirs. We heard the table say "we didn't touch it", which I don't think they did, but that doesn't make the waitresses next move okay. Our waitress takes the Pad Thai off their table and brings it ours. She said that it was taken to the wrong table and then said "they didn't touch it, do you still want it?" We of course said no, and then she said she'd have a new one made. She took the plate to the kitchen and brought us out a new one (hopefully), a few minutes later. The Pad Thai was okay, as far as taste, and again "okay" is being generous. We weren't offered any kind of discount, not that would have changed my opinion of the quality of food or the service. However, I feel it was warranted to at least take the Pad Thai off my bill. Mistakes happen and had we just had to wait longer for our food because the other waitress took it to the wrong table by mistake, I would have been completely fine with it. But, offering me food that had been sitting on another table for about 5 mins, I am not fine with that. If you wanted to look past that, I would still say, the ambiance is lacking, the taste of the food is lacking and there are better places in town to get Thai from in general.

This is the best Thai we've had in Reno. We were there early for dinner so it wasn't crowded.

Pretty standard Thai food near downtown Reno. Service was good. Selection also food. Noodles and curries - as you'd expect. We liked the TV playing the preparation of the dishes. Good info.We will be back.

I had the Panang curry and my friend had Se Ew. Both were excellent. Topped it off with a beautiful presentation of Mango sticky rice which was beyond delicious! We were there for the end of their lunch hour but the service was excellent and friendly and we did not feel rushed. Ambiance is not particularly noteworthy but the whole experience was great.

Came down for dinner tonight with a friend and had the salmon red curry and pot stickers! Fabulous!! Thank you Coconut Downtown for a great night out.

The noodles were delicious. They take their spice levels seriously; a warning to the ambitious, the 3 smoked us out. The drunken noodles and Se Ew were both some of the best Thai noodles my husband and I had had in our lives. The sauces are amazing and the dishes were cooked perfectly. Would highly recommend! (Just watch for the spice!)

I have been to The Coconut a couple of times for dinner, and I think it's good but doesn't beat my all time favorite Thai restaurant in town. Overall, I think the dishes here are a little sweeter than they need to be, which makes me wonder if they are catering too much to a Western palate. Because of the downtown location, they require keys for the restrooms--a minor inconvenience, I guess. Service is neutral--not friendly but not cold, either. I would go here if someone else suggested it, but it's not my top choice for Thai in Reno/Sparks.
