This place was a random stop on the way back from skiing in Vermont and holy cow was it an awesome surprise. Sam was a fantastic server that offered a recommendation off the menu and provided a stain stick after I got hot sauce on my shirt. The tofu scramble was killer and my buddy Matt loved his burger. Pretty cool building too.

BE AWARE!! This restaurant is located in zombieville!! I cannot describe the amount of filth, trash, abject poverty, homeless zombies walking around - RIGHT outside OF THE FRONT gate. The smell. It was shocking. 😳 We were genuinely worried about parking in the vicinity. We had driven 15 miles out of the way on our journey to eat at the restaurant due to the high ratings. A complete waste.
The food? Meh. Nothing special. I had the cheesy grits and shrimp. Grits were lukewarm. Too much of a spice (I think garlic)Shrimp - ugh. My mom didn’t order as she was so turned off by the outside that she didn’t want to eat. My husband had the raspberry Brie French toast and said it was good - not great.
Atmosphere? SO LOUD you couldn’t carry on a conversation without raising your voice.

Do not fall for the high ratings - you will be disappointed. The only thing I think of that would be the basis for the ratings are lots of locals who are simply used to living in such squalid conditions.

Iron Gate Cafe is hands down the most mouth-watering brunch spot in downtown Albany. The interior is gorgeous and welcoming, the service is lovely, and the food is expectional. The pancakes and elvis memphis entree is outstanding. Always order a side of cornbread; it is decadent. They have a large variety of food to select from including lunch options like burgers and chicken sandwiches. The drinks are delicious. I highly recommend the ice Chai, hot chai, and if you are feeling spicy the mimosas. The food and drink specials rotate. They are family friendly establishment as well. The staff is incredibly friendly and this truly makes a difference when dining out. The noise level can be moderate but it is fairly easy to still chat. This cafe is definitely worth checking out.

Up for a visit seeing my daughter in college …her , my mother and myself attended for the first time and the reviews didn’t lie …Absolutely amazing ,home cooked, southern feel cuisine …first time having a Rasberry Brie French toast 10/10 also ordered the gingerbread mudslide and marshmallow fluff latte , my daughter had the chocolate chip buttermilk pancakes, home fries and my mother a Elvis scrambled omelette ..We All Thoroughly Enjoyed EVERYTHING …and the ambiance /service was impeccable…Certainly will be a Must Every TRIP 😋

Had the best experience at Iron Gate Cafe yesterday. My Family are in from out of town for a funeral and they were able to quickly accommodate a table of 10. The best menu for everyone to find something they loved. Drinks and every dish was incredible. Server was warm and wonderful. The space is incredibly beautiful.
