I’ve been coming here since I was 6 years old!! Which makes it about 30 years now 😳😳💛
I no longer live in Astoria but make the very long drive to enjoy my absolute favorite Afghan food - probably ever. The food is so authentic and the flavors have never changed! I highly recommend their rice dishes especially the chicken kebab. My husband always gets the combo it’s so much food for a reasonable price. The ownership has never changed it tells you a lot about the place. Please don’t ever leave 💛💛

The lamb shing kabob combo! You won’t regret it! It’s so good I went back again the next day! Hahaha… remember to add the green sauce as well as the white sauce to it. It makes such interesting flavors with the raisins. I will definitely be going back! The place has no ramp which is unfortunate for parents with strollers. I wish that was different but other than that food is fantastic!

I've waited for way too long before trying this place, because it looks so unassuming from outside. Best food I had in the neighborhood in years. Best bang for my buck, too.
We (couple) shared the Entrée du jour. A mixed grill.
Kefta + chicken kabob + whole LAMB SHANK over a plate of rice. Charred, juicy, well seasoned. Delicious carrots+raisins sprinkled on top.
Appetizers: their dumplings taste better than anything I had in Flushing. Thinner dough, better seasoning. Tangy yogurt on top. You need to try these dumplings.
The meat was so delicious we didn't say a word. We just ate and ate and ate. The sauces on the side (mint yogurt, red sauce, green sauce) were so tangy and good.
$25 a pop, tips included. And we had leftovers.
Eric Asimov rated the place highly in 1998, back when he was a NYT restaurant critic. 30 years after, Balkh Shish still goes hard. People don't talk about this place enough. Deserves way more love in my view. Give it a try

The people working there are super friendly and made us fresh food and it's a good decent place for sitting. The food was also tasty. Would definitely recommend to others and would also go again when I get a chance.

Amazing tasty authentic Afghani food. The lamb shank was the best I have ever eaten. Personally supervised by the owner.
