Sotto la Luna 34-39 31st St, Astoria Italian • $$

“Craving Cacio e Pepe tonight, I decided to drop by Sotto La Luna for takeout. Upon arrival, I was warmly greeted by Francesca, one of the owners, who was incredibly sweet and welcoming. She suggested that I dine in at the bar, and I’m so glad I took her advice.

Sitting by the bar gave me a front-row seat to the culinary magic happening in the kitchen. Watching the chefs expertly prepare their pasta dishes was a delightful experience, and the ambiance of the restaurant only enhanced the experience. The decor is tasteful, creating a cozy yet elegant atmosphere.

As for the food, my Cacio e Pepe was served directly from a cheese wheel—an indulgent touch that made the dish all the more delicious. The flavors were spot on, and the pasta was perfectly cooked. Every bite was a testament to the quality and care that goes into the food here.

The service was top-notch, with attentive staff ensuring I had everything I needed. I’ll definitely be returning with friends to explore more of the menu. Sotto La Luna is a fantastic addition to the neighborhood, offering exceptional food and a wonderful dining experience. Highly recommended!”

“It’s mostly a takeout place. They do have a few booths and Soccer on the TV, but the real draw is the food. The chicken enchiladas were great and my girlfriend really enjoyed her pork chops. It’s clear the staff here are trying hard and it shows. I would say the grilled meats are much better than average. The chicken in my enchilada was grilled, which gave it a much better flavor than I normally get with chicken enchiladas. You can see the presentation is also nice and the portions were large.”

Blackbird's 41-19 30th Ave., Astoria Bar • $

“We were impressed with the food and service here. This is one of those places we'd walked by a hundred times and always said "we should check that place out one of these days". We finally did and liked it a lot. Nice bar and restaurant with a good menu with plenty of options, some with a Cajun flare.
We ordered the Q18 Burger (half ground beef half ground bacon), the Shrimp Poboy, the Mexican style corn on the cob and half a dozen chicken wings with mild buffalo sauce (they make all of there own sauces so we thought we'd play it safe on the first run). Everything was really good and we were very impressed with the wings. My wife mentioned that this is her new "wing place" so that's that. The burger was good and the poboy could have used a couple more shrimp, but was otherwise good too. The fries, both regular and sweet potato, were crispy and very hot. The wings were crispy under the sauce and I would call their spice level normal so the mild definitely had some heat but didn't get my head sweating.
Pretty lively bottled and draft beer list as well as some wine and cocktails which we didn't explore this visit. Several flat screens with various games on for the sports fans and the place was quiet enough to have a conversation without raising your voice much. The bathroom was clean and nice enough.
Our waitress Caitlin (sp?) was super friendly and fun and we didn't have any problems with our food or anything else. Very nice friendly local vibe here and we'll certainly be back to try more of the menu.
Easily recommend this place.”

“Popeyes was formed in Arabi, Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans, Louisiana, in St. Bernard Parish. It first opened its doors on June 12, 1972, as "Chicken on the Run". Owner Al Copeland (1944–2008) wanted to compete with Kentucky Fried Chicken, but his restaurant failed after several months. Copeland reopened the restaurant four days later as Popeyes Mighty Good Chicken. By 1975, the company had been renamed as Popeyes Famous Fried Chicken. Copeland started franchising his restaurant in 1976, beginning in Louisiana. The chain expanded to Canada in 1984, and opened its 500th restaurant in 1985. B. P. Newman of Laredo, Texas, acquired several franchises in Texas and surrounding states. Two hundred additional locations were added during a period of slower expansion.By 1990, Copeland Enterprises was in default on $391 million in debts it had taken on in its 1989 purchase of Church's, a rival fast food chain also focusing in fried chicken, and by April 1991, the company filed for bankruptcy protection. In October 1992, the court approved a plan by a group of Copeland's creditors that resulted in the creation of America's Favorite Chicken Company, Inc. (AFC) to serve as the new parent company for Popeyes and Church's.[14] AFC went public in 2001 with initial public offering (IPO) of $142,818,479.[15] On December 29, 2004, AFC sold Church's to Arcapita (formerly Crescent Capital Investments) retaining Popeyes.[citation needed]On August 8, 2000, Popeyes announced a franchise development plan/agreement that included 35 new restaurant locations around Australia in a bid to solidify their presence within the Asia Pacific region. All were to be located in Sydney, the capital city of New South Wales. On June 17, 2014, Popeyes announced it had re-acquired full control of its seasonings, recipes, and other proprietary food preparation techniques from Diversified Foods & Seasonings, which remained under the control of Al Copeland and his estate after the creditor sale of Popeyes to AFC. Popeyes had continued to license the seasonings, recipes, and techniques from DF&S for a yearly 'spice royalty', before buying them outright for $43 million. DF&S remains the main supplier for Popeyes until at least 2029.”

“Came here to try the new chicken strips. Compared to my previous experience trying the strips, this experience was slightly better. The strips were juicy and warm, but were poorly battered. Since the flavor comes from the batter, they missed the mark here in that regard. The strips were not as crispy, a bit soggy, but the fries were the star. Very crunch, hot, well-seasoned and fresh. My order was ready fairly quick, I placed my order online just a few minutes prior to arriving. The staff were friendly and quick in getting me my order before the next person on line placed their order. The dinning area was clean and seems well-maintained. The staff here were friendly and accommodating.”

“We arrived a little too early before the restaurant opened, but the waitress let us in 30 mins early. We were hungry and wanted to order lamb chops. Alas, we had to order veal instead. And I asked for a tarama -my starting point for any Greek meal and lemon potatoes, another favorite of mine. The veal was tender and delicious and tarama along with warm bread was very tasty. Gregory's Corner is perhaps one the best small taverna in Astoria. What they lack in choices on the menu, they make up in service. The waitress who took our order was really on point and gave us solid recommendations. Gregory's is a nice cozy spot with a truly Mediterranean feel. The tables are well-spaced, and the decor is bright and breezy. Outside the restaurant is a little hard to make out up the street and is covered with too much foliage. The entrance is not clearly marked. Inside you can hear the waitress and owner arguing and speaking in Greek. It got a little intence at times, but was fun”

Il Nonno Ristorante 25-17 Astoria Blvd, Astoria Italian • $$

“Being that this place just opened there was a wait to get in since the space is on the smaller side. Unfortunately they don’t take reservations, however they were able to accommodate our party of 5. We did overhear the party of 2 after us would have to wait 45 minutes, more or less, so timing is something to consider if you’re planning to come. Once we were seated, there was little to no wait being served water and complementary bread. We had questions about the wine and the waiter was really attentitive.
For appetizers we got the calamari and tuna tartare. Both were good but I’d definitely recommend the classic, calamari fritti. For entrees we got the fettuccine bolognese, porcini ravioli, and penne arrabbiata con salmone. The bolognese was a comforting classic with a big portion. The porcini ravioli was very creamy and flavorful, while the penne arrabbiata con salmone was very filling and as mentioned in the description, on the spicier side. Don’t forget to save room for dessert, the tiramisu was fluffy, airy and most importantly delicious.

Overall this place is good for classic pastas and a casual dinner. The only downside was that the bathroom was dirty, toilet paper on the floor, water all over, etc.”

“4.5 for a takeout order of the classic banh mi. Bread was a great texture, crispy crust with soft inside, nice balance of pate and tender meat with shredded pickled veggies. I just forgot to ask for spicy and I would have enjoyed some jalapeño and hot sauce as well, but that’s on me. Very excited to have this place now since I haven’t had a banh mi this good in western Queens.”
