I had long anticipated a visit to the historic Charlton Tavern, The ambiance was perfect, rustic warm and inviting, with well done Autumn decor. The food was very good. I had a veggie wrap and my son had a Haddock Rueben. However, the sides of Coleslaw & Macaroni Salad were clearly deli-esque, kind of slimy, seemingly not homemade. I was looking forward to an early dinner and leisurely conversation on a rainy Sunday afternoon. The waitress was attentive, albeit overly so. She wanted to give me a box when I was still eating and only half done with my plate. These "nudgy" interruptions were quite frequent ( except when we needed coffee refills), and gave me the feeling of being rushed. After we decided against dessert, I was enjoying catching up with my son when the hostess came over to the table and started moving things around... the reason being that she wanted to know if we needed anything else. I wanted to say, "are we getting the Bum's rush ?" I understand they were trying to prepare for the evening crowd, but all customers are important and should be allowed to enjoy the moment without being fearful of overstaying their welcome. After all, this is not a fast food venue where the objective is to fill people up and move them out, although that is how we felt. Based on this feeling of anxiousness we experienced, I will not return.
The Charlton Tavern has a rustic pub charm vibe throughout. The French Onion Soup is outstanding!! We went on a Tuesday (not super busy) night for dinner, we had reservations (which I highly recommend). Three of us orders burgers, which were cooked to perfection, fries and onion rings. The other two in our party ordered fried haddock, perfect crispy outside with a great crunch. Chocolate Mousse (smoothie, rich and creamy) and Chocolate lava cake (decadent chocolate lovers treat) for dessert rounded out our meal. Definitely plan to go back to experience more of their menu.

Went here for some pub fare and it was perfect. Had the special sliced prime rib sandwich and some garlic parm wings. Prices were very reasonable. Definitely will be back to try something from the dinner menu the selections looked outstanding.

Come for beer & charm only.
First red flag, vermouth not refrigerated. C’mon now… fortified wine needs to be in the fridge.
Ordered French onion soup. (Original street vendor style with cheese & bread on the bottom) lacking any trace of sherry or salt. Mediocre attempt at caramelizing onions.
Next up was crab cakes… bland, zero seasoning, flavorless, bitter old oil, complete rubbish. If they’re served with remoulade sauce, skip the artificial thickened balsamic glaze product.

We discovered this gem of a place recently. We walked in without a reservation on a recent Wednesday night and were thoroughly enchanted by the quaint “shire-like” atmosphere. I ordered a red ale that was garnet-dark and deliciously full-bodied. My husband ordered the brisket with the mashed potatoes and said he would get it again…plate cleaned. I ordered the Mediterranean Chicken from the specials menu and really enjoyed the lemon/herb sauce with mashed potatoes and fresh veggies on the side. Needless to say we pinned this historic place and will be back, probably with guests.

I went here this past week for dinner. It was my 3-4 time because the food was always good. Not so much this past Thursday night. When we finally got our dinner it was like reheated fish and it cooked to dry and the potatoes tasted like old leftovers. I had ordered baked fish and received fried. Honestly I was so disappointed because up until this visit I could not be happier with this restaurant.

Food was tasty and drinks got delivered very quickly. Atmosphere was cozy but a little bit too loud. Waitress refilled our bread baskets when they got low. Even though the diner was busy, the waitress seated us very fast and delivered our food quickly
