I would like to let anyone who is planning to go to Sunshine to eat to strongly reconsider because there are many other phenomenal dining options on Washington Avenue. Here is the experience that my family and I had. My husband and I both grew up in Brooklyn but came back to visit from out of town. We chose Sunshine because Yelp said it was dog friendly. We opted to leave the dog home and we came out with my parents in law, sister in law, and our 8 month old baby girl. After ordering coffee and mimosas, our waiter opted to serve piping hot coffee right over the stroller where my baby was sitting. My husband was livid! As I turned to caution the waiter about how he was unsafely serving, he literally dropped his entire tray of drinks and coffee right on my baby’s stroller. Glass and ceramic cups were broken, liquid splashed all into my hair and eye, my stroller saturated with liquor and coffee and sharp shards were everywhere. The waiter knew he messed up and briefly apologized. And by brief, I mean he said “I’m sorry” and that was it. There was no acknowledgement or care that hot and alcoholic beverages were all over me, possibly the baby, or the stroller. My party was in complete disbelief but we kept our composure as we ensured that the baby wasn’t burned or injured. She was screaming and crying from the commotion. I had to wipe all that was spilled from my face and clothing. The manager and the waiter cleaned the mess from the floor. Neither of them asked if the baby or I was okay. The manager didn’t say anything to us… she didn’t even introduce herself as the manager. My stroller and cup holders were so saturated that I had to literally request a bucket to empty the liquid from, and a rag to wipe it down myself. The staff seemed completely unbothered, with a lack of empathy or apology that any human would expect to have received if ever in this situation. Because we did not want to loose the day due to time and scheduling constraints, we stayed for the meal. The food was not delicious at all. In fact it was inedible to mid, which added further insult to injury: 1)The French toast came out drowned in syrup and completely soggy. It was inedible. 2)The steak and eggs were ordered medium well and was so chewy that it went uneaten. 3)The shrimp and grits were extremely dry… it was literally 4 seasoned shrimp over a bed of grits…no gravy. 4) Huevos Rancheros was extremely bland. It did not taste like anything was seasoned in this entre. 5)BLT- Bread was toasted extra hard, bacon fried hard, boarder line burned, and overall DRY! At the end, they handed us the bill. I noticed that the drinks were not on it. I asked to speak to the manager and I informed her that it was really disgusting that such a dangerous situation occurred and that she didn’t have the decency to speak to us when the ordeal occurred. She said that she heard the waiter say sorry so she didn’t feel like it was necessary to say anything on the restaurants behalf. I informed her that as a manager, she should have said something in the moment to acknowledge us, and how bad the situation was, and how bad it could have been. My child was put in harms way twice! Let alone, I was drenched in liquid and there was no expression of care, regret, or empathy for the dangerous and embarrassing situation. She said she took the drinks off as the apology, and I let her know that it was not enough. We are more that capable of paying a bill, so her assumption that taking $30 worth of drinks off was a slap in the face. Acknowledgement would have been priceless! I spoke to her calmly and expressed my disappointment with her inaction and she dismissed us by saying “just don’t worry about it” and walked away. Paying the bill was not, or is never an issue… but clearly she did not understand the principal of it all. So I truly in my heart hope that anyone who may want to dine at Sunshine reads this and decides to pass. The lack of friendly and trained service, and the quality of food is not worth anyones time.

Good but very small portions. Order two if you are hungry

Brunch appears to be a ritual here and this place is a good spot to indulge. Our group of friends enjoyed good typical brunch fare well-prepared and served up with friendliness. Good outdoor seating.

Chicken pot pie. Mocktails. Kale salad. The staff made our experience an outstanding, fun time!

I really like the atmosphere here. We sat at the bar which was comfortable. I first ordered the Baked eggs (pictured below) but I didn't eat it because the yolk was uncooked. However, the sauce was good and if you like saucy running eggs you'll enjoy. I ended up with grits and bacon which were okay. The wait staff was really friendly and helpful.

Local relaxed and busy place in the neighborhood. Shrimp and grits were great. Nice selection of music plays has everyone is chatting and eating. Friendly and good service.

The Shrimp & Grits were some of the best I’ve ever had! The Bloody Mary was excellent! My husband had the Steak & Eggs & said it was very good! The down side is the place is small and loud but the staff was friendly and helpful.

My family and I came here for brunch on a Saturday around Noon. We had to wait 20 minutes for a table for 4. We also had a toddler with us and just to let you know, they did not have a high chair available for him so we kept him on our lap. It wasn't a huge deal for us but wanted to let everyone know in case this is something you need. Inside is pretty cute! It's very 1920s Brooklyn. We started with some bloody Mary's and mimosas. I got the huevos rancheros, my husband and brother in law got the steak and eggs and my sister in law got the veggie burger. We also got a side order of biscuits. Everything came out super fast, which was lovely. The huevos were really good! I loved the ranchero sauce was delicious! Instead of tortilla chips, the eggs and beans and veggies were placed on top of giant open taco shells. Overall I liked it! My husband and brother in law liked their steak and eggs but just said it was good and not great. My sister in law liked her veggie burger. It was clearly homemade with lentils which looked amazing! The biscuits were pretty good but a bit burnt. I liked the jam that came with them. Overall, it was a good meal. I think they were annoyed we had a toddler but hid it. I would recommend the food for sure!

Brunch date with a good friend. I have been to Sunshine numerous times and it never lets me done. My friends loves their cocktails, but I like to eat my calories. Love the Brussel Sprout Hash, Shrimp and Grits, French toast and Avocado toast. And the prices are amazing!! A must stop for Brooklyn. Afterwards can walk to museum, gardens and the library!! Co is sometimes my treat after a long run in the park

Enjoyed standard dinner in this friendly hipster pub. Service was friendly, although a little confused.

We would definitely return. If you are visiting the Brooklyn Museum or Botanical Gardens, it is a short walk away The waitstaff is very responsive and the food was tasty and well prepared (and a plentiful portion). Coffee is good too! I had the ricotta toast with honey and fruit, with a side of scrambled. Delish.

Went here for brunch, an excellent brunch. The Brussel sprout dish was excellent. The shrimp and grits was somewhat of a miss, it was just a bit over cooked and dense but the flavor as such was good. The biscuits and gravy was another hit. The coffee only so, so. The staff was super friendly and nice.

We visited the Brooklyn Museum and afterwards needed lunch and didn't want to eat at the museum. I checked out TA and saw this place nicely reviewed and close by. So off we went. We walk in and was told there was a 10 min wait. I point to an open table and ask about that one. Was told someone was coming for that one. They didn't use the word 'reserved' so I thought it was odd, but ok. We go outside to wait. About 10 mins later, we're called back in and shown to our table. The same one that I pointed too. That was just odd. The waitstaff was friendly and quick. Coffee was good and brought before the food. I prefer that. The food: Pros, there was plenty. I had the BLT, which had a lovely side salad and lots of thick bacon. My companions had the eggs and the French toast. Cons: my BLT could have used more something. It was kind of flavorless. The bacon wasn't salty and the tomatoes weren't sweet/tangy. The play between those two and the coolness of the lettuce are what makes a BLT great. This wasn't great. I should have asked for more garlic mayo. Also, it came as one big sandwich. Not cut into two. A bit hard to manage. According to my companions, the eggs were fine and the French toast wasn't cooked all the way thru. If I do find myself on the neighborhood again, I'd try it again. Maybe it was an off day.

We had a great meal here with our teenagers after visiting the Brooklyn Museum. It was just a short walk. All four of us loved our meals from the happy hour menu. We had burgers, a pasta dish and a steak sandwich. The cocktail list is extensive and I had a well-made drink, my hubby had a beer. Friendly service, nice atmosphere, good food, decent prices!
