Spent a beautiful birthday celebration last night with friends at YAKAR! We were welcomed and greeted by the friendliest staff ( and we arrived more than 1/2 hour late ). They helped us get seated and immediately brought menus and filled our glasses with a choice of plain or sparkling water. They were helpful
In suggesting what would please our individual needs. We opted to share an appetizer of scrumptious “sweetbreads” spiced and cooked to perfection. When it arrived we were all
Impressed as it was more than sufficient to be shared by four. That along with the fresh and hot delicious mini rolls with babaganoush spread was a delight that hit the spot for us all. The staff was alert to the proper timing to come and check our needs without interfering with our comfort level. When our mains presented at the table at the exact same moment for us all, it was visual excitement awakening the palate. Each had a character of its own. Cooked exactly as ordered indivually per our own request. Satisfying beyond expectation! Culminated with dessert if a tiramisu mini cake topped with a fiery sparkler and the staff singing happy birthday and wishing me beautiful birthday wishes to come.
An added beautiful plus was when a special appearance was made by the owner introducing himself and chatting briefly with us. It added a personal touch on behalf of YAKAR’s desire to please its clients. Thank you all for celebrating with me!

So we had the Miami ribs, pastrami croquettes, tongue and sweetbreads…the latter two along with the truffle risotto were actually my entree as my better half considers sweetbreads and tongue to be culinary contraband and hence are rarely seen in our home unless they’re part of a “to go” order…for one…speaking of my better half, her entree was the center cut rib eye with string beans and truffle fries…for dessert we opted for tiramisu and churros

The ribs were “slide off the bone” soft and succulent with a balanced flavor that didn’t drown your tastebuds in sauce, the croquettes were as described…definitely not coquettish…(which I was kind of expecting the minute I saw they were served with “saffron mayo”)…are they going to replace a classic pastrami on rye? Not for me, but whoever created this definitely had his priorities straight as the signature presence of serious pastrami was definitely prominent—btw, when I reference “serious pastrami”, it’s because a lot of places who offer pastrami in non-sandwich forms tend to use that chewy, lifeless, mass-produced supermarket stuff—the pastrami in these croquettes was none of the above, my sweetbreads were satisfying without being salty and the risotto had a nice consistency vs some places who seem to confuse it with porridge, gruel or something soupier…my wife’s center cut ribeye was medium rare as ordered, and tenderer than imagined…not surprising as this is a steakhouse…as far as far as the tiramisu, stay tuned, we couldn’t manage more than a bite so we saved it for tonight…but that one bite was all it took to realize this was the real deal…not one of those overly sweet, nuance-numbing concoctions that are apparently created to eliminate low blood sugar concerns for at least a month

Ok, I’m done with the food part, if you haven’t guessed yet, we really enjoyed Yakar…but here’s what really blew us away…sometime between our reservation and arrival we realized we’d have to head back earlier than expected…as we had pretty much decided what we’d be ordering and were looking forward to our dinner(especially my sweetbreads and tongue), we decided to change it to a “to go”… order…while it’s not the first time we’ve had to do this…it was the first time we did it with Yakar…and the first time the person taking our order interrupted me to ask where we planned on taking it—when I told him Rockland County (about a 90 minute drive on a Sunday night)…he suggested some changes, based on items that would “travel better” and not lose anything flavor-wise once they were reheated…as a few of his suggestions were actually less expensive than our intended orders, we have to believe he did this because of professional pride…and yeah, the tongue and sweetbreads (along with everything else)were just perfect even almost two hours later🙃…
BTW because I got there a bit earlier than expected, while I was waiting for my order(all of 5 minutes), I had a chance to observe what we missed “experientially”…there were 20 or so guests and while everyone was enjoying and the energy was animated, it wasn’t the raucous over the top vibe we’ve been subjected to in other places…not that there’s anything wrong with that…but it’s nice to know there’s still seriously superb steakhouses where you can carry on a conversation without yelling…AND if need be, even hear yourself think (if you’re so inclined)…
And if you are taking your order to go, the takeout bags are really groovy…
