I’m writing this review after just getting home from Block Hill Station in tears.

I just wanted to wind down after a long week with a beer. The bar was playing a movie on one of the TVs that I was passively glancing up at. And then there was a sexual assault scene. I know my triggers aren’t anyone’s responsibility but my own, but frankly, I don’t think it’s unreasonable for women to not want to watch sexual assault at their neighborhood bar. I’m a survivor, and the anniversary of the incident was just a few days ago. It’s raw and fresh in my mind.

I was blindsided when I saw it. I tried to put it out of my mind. I stayed at the bar for about 10 minutes after having seen it. (I probably was only at the bar for 15-20 minutes total.) But I could feel a panic attack coming on that I could not fight off. So I asked for the check, but my tab hadn’t met the card minimum and I didn’t have cash. I had tears silently streaming down my face at this point and I didn’t really know what to say to the bartender. I just kind of stared at him. And then I felt like I had no choice but to tell him what I had seen, and that I didn’t want to get another drink to meet the card minimum. I said I was uncomfortable and I just wanted to leave. The bartender, to his credit, *did* let me leave without paying my $5 tab.

However, the bartender’s response to me is why I’m writing this review to begin with. Bars should vet the movies they play to prevent stuff like this, but I get it, mistakes happen. I don’t think anyone is a bad person for unintentionally displaying sexual assault on TV. I wasn’t looking for a hug or a tissue from the bartender, either. I don’t need sympathy. But the guy was a jackass to me in an incredibly vulnerable moment. I told him what I saw and he looked at me like I had three heads. Then he said, “uhhhh??? Sorry?? Okayyy??? I didn’t know.” His tone was callous and he seemed incredulous that anyone could be made upset by on-screen depictions of a man violently groping a woman. He was clearly very annoyed that I even mentioned it, let alone had the nerve to be upset by it. I should add that he was perfectly friendly before this, both to me and other customers. That changed when I told him through tears about what I had seen. If he had shown even an ounce of sincerity, kindness, or understanding, it would have made all the difference to me both as a customer and as a human being with feelings. I left the bar sobbing because of him.

I really liked this bar and I wanted be a regular at it. I’ve been here several times before. Generally, I don’t think the bar is hostile to women, but the white male bartender with long brown hair is not someone I feel safe around. I will never come here again. Women deserve better.

My wife and I stumbled in on a cold December afternoon. The bar tender Kelsey was amazing and very friendly. We liked it so much we stopped in again before the day was over!

Great service, good vibes, and fun location. The tap list is extensive, and I give high marks to the numerous board and card games they have “on tap.” Get their Guinness pour. Can’t wait to come back!

Blockhill station.... More like Joyhill Station! This place is a southern meal, this place is the warm embrace, this place is a child's smile. Don't ever change, I'll be back for more beer in the near future!

Beer and shot place pretending to be a cocktail bar. Inattentive and inexperienced bartender. Small, hot, and uncomfortable.
