My friend invited me to grab lunch here and I thought to myself “I am not a fancy toast girlie” but went nevertheless. Very happy to have been proven wrong! I can’t stop thinking about the mycelium toast with the robust pesto and the dill sourdough. Really quality ingredients treated with love. Gave me the balanced nutritional strength to fuel running around for the rest of the day. Can’t wait to go back!

Food was OK - where you'll really get good items is the shakes / drinks on the backside of the menu. It is verrrry cute but also tight and hard to find a seat, and food took a while.

Yes the owner/manager has a strong personality but the place is super cozy and the food and drinks are so goodEdit: I don’t mean strong personality in a bad way btw!
We did not know anything about this place until I searched for "brunch" one Saturday morning and saw that Companion Cafe had much higher ratings than anything else around. It is incredible what a popular business they built in such a tiny space! Coffee drinks (note: no decaf is served here), breakfast/brunch foods, tons of plants and there's even a bathroom! We ordered a cappuccino, omelette and French toast. I REALLY liked my omelette, would give it 5 stars. The French toast was overly rich - generously covered with nut butter, a dollop of jam, sprinkled with maple syrup, and finally adorned with apple slices. We tried to finish it but it was simply too much and wouldnt have been good reheated later. Overall, glad to have tried this spot - clearly they've built a loyal following and have a particular vibe.

So impressed with what they've managed to do with the small space they have. Chai, coffee, service, ambience and food all top notch.

What will you get here? Carefully crafted plates with passion that are not only aesthetically appealing and mouth-watering, but actually delicious and ecstatic. This is THE breakfast place to try -both for its unique vibes and amazing menu. And who said healthy didn't rhyme with tasty? So happy we stumbled upon Companion Cafe, and I can only recommend it 100 (gazillion) percent.N.B I actually wrote this while still in the Cafe, with a full(filled) heart and stomach :)

The burrito was ok, but the staff's attention leaves a lot to be desired, they have a bad attitude, as a customer sometimes the food can be ok but at least if the staff makes it pleasant, it's great. I would not return to this cafe.

Ate at companion for the second time today in what I am sure will be a long standing string of repeat occurrences!I started with the cardamom iced coffee with milk which was just the right balance of spice to ice on this summerlike day in a climate changing November. Companion has hit the nail on the head for how to feed people in a way that is socially and globally aware and sensitive.I sat inside under the plants at the bar so that I could be close action and listen to the Andi Otto remixes which took us from 'Bangalore Whispers' to 'Six' in a bop and a hip sway that passed between the crew in the kitchen made its way through the bar via a sort of osmosis to make me want to dance as I ate. This time I had the Korma toast with avocado, which balanced a rich, nutty spread with the tang of the purple pico and the lightness of micro green to top it all off, all on top of a thick slab of just-rightly grilled bread. It carried me away. I felt crazy in my enthusiastic gestures to the staff that were trying to communicate "goddam!! This is the best meal I've had in a while!!" through vigorous nods and thumbs up symbols with a chef's kiss gesture thrown in there somewhere as well.I felt so nourished that it was like being high. Not just by the food but by the care in its selection, preparation, and presentation. This spot crafts food that is artful and loving without being overdone.I highly recommend that you attend when you have a moment of leisure to sit and enjoy the specificity that this establishment has to offer.

In the 16 years that I have been a resident in Prospect Heights, I have never had such a poor restaurant experience. It's disheartening to see a cafe so out of touch with the essence of community and hospitality, especially in an area that once celebrated these very values. My recent experience at Companion Cafe was rife with frustrations and bad vibes, and it's evident that it has become emblematic of the negative side effects of gentrification. But the atmosphere wasn't the only thing that left a bitter taste. The cafe operates under a set of mind-boggling rules, including: the one where a coffee can't be warmed up unless the cup is entirely empty, and conflicting messaging: (see the manifesto photo) where it starts off with love and gratitude, but if you can't afford $20 per person then you can't eat here. It's a prime example of a scarcity mindset in action, where the fear of giving even a little extra trumps customer satisfaction. However, what truly took the cake was my interaction with the owner. When I attempted to provide feedback about the rules and contradictory messaging on the cafe's menu, not only was it not received with grace, but the owner/chef Kai became defensive. Claiming we were sitting at his table as if it was his private property "his territory", only showcased an unsettling entitlement. No Kai, the tables are outside on the PUBLIC sidewalk, you don't OWN the sidewalk. So so reminiscent of a colonizer's mindset, and the fact that he's just another wannabe white business guy trying to stake his claim in a neighborhood without fully understanding or respecting its history made the experience all the more sour. It's a shame that what could have been a hub for community and connection has devolved into a space defined by exclusion, stringent rules, and a clear disconnect from the neighborhood's roots.Oh the food...it's mediocre at best. Probably has a lot of foot traffic because there's not a lot of breakfast spots in the neighborhood.I await your attack Kai, as I see from your responses to other low ranking reviews which also called out your scarcity mindset vibrational actions and attitude, you can't seem to take feedback from them either. And please for the love of god, wash your hands! As a restaurant owner...SMH.

Went there randomly this week and it was a great find. The food was really tasty and with depth. It’s not some random wannabe fusion healthy place where it’s flavorless and leaves you hungry. Here, they actually make nutritious and delicious food that is genuinely innovative.Highly recommend. Also hot take, coffee is better than many actual coffee spots.
