The person working the register told me he could not ring anything up because it was closing time, which it certainly was not. I asked him what they were going to do with the 8 baguettes behind him on display, and he told me they would most likely be THROWN OUT. I asked in that case if he could give me one, as why should it go to waste needlessly? He informed me it was AGAINST THE RULES.
Also... $8.70 for a baguette?!?! It's half that price at Brooklyn French Bakers.

The stuff here is good, but the pricing is out of control.
Just got the curry puff. At the price there’s nothing inside the puff. I got like 1-2 tiny pieces of potato and a piece of carrot.
I know the response is oh please come back to let us fix this… but if the owner intended for this to be a good value or even be a proper item at this price I wouldn’t be writing that there was nothing inside the curry puff to begin with.
Update January ‘26:
Pricing is still outrageous for some items like the sandwiches that range from approx $14-18. The side of the sandwiches are equivalent to a single slice of bread for surface area if you can imagine that, and mostly bread posts of ingredients.
The focaccia is just adequate and spongy, lacks flavor and ingredients on top. Honestly I love small business, but don’t try and slam people for what you think they would pay like corporations. I understand for some people this is their entire lively hood, but again read the room.

I reviewed Laurel several months ago and left a slightly negative review because I felt the drip coffee was overpriced and the service was kind of pretentious.
I still feel that way BUT I can see the work and craft that goes into baking in the back and they have one of the best croissants I’ve had in NYC. That being said it cost over $20 for two pastries and a coffee.
I feel I need to compare Laurel to the other fantastic French bakery in the area, where baguettes are always $2 and the service is welcoming. Laurel is my local coffee shop/ bakery and I would absolutely love to come back again and again if the service was pleasant and the prices were fair.
For now I’ll keep walking down to court street for my bread.

I had high hopes for this bakery after hearing several local recommendations, but I left disappointed.
First, the pricing is surprisingly high: $8 for a small croissant, $6 for an iced drip coffee, and $6.50 for a cortado. For comparison, places like Hanis and Librae charge lower prices for much larger portions and higher quality.
Unfortunately, Laurel’s croissant didn’t justify the cost: the interior wasn’t soft enough, and the outer texture felt overly thick and coarse. The coffee was similarly underwhelming, leaving me questioning how these prices are set.
Overall, Laurel simply doesn’t deliver the quality to match its premium pricing. I won’t be returning, and I’d recommend exploring the many better and more affordable bakeries nearby in Brooklyn Heights and Dumbo.

Small local shop that does a lot of things right. Coffee, in house made milks, pastries and a jambon beurre to make your day. Tables outside.

Mostly take away with a couple seatings outside. Excellent bakery with great quality of bread and pastries. It is inconvenient to reach by public transportation unless you drive/bike here.

Everything I've had here has been exceptional - usually getting a few pastries and maybe a sandwich. Love that you can get super high quality pastries with seasonally focused ingredients and interesting + well balanced flavors with less of the line / chaos of similar places like radio or l'apartment. Laurel is better in my opinion too! Many fruit pastries let the fruit flavor get overpowered by the general sweetness but not here. Not sure what the complaints about the staff/slowness are about, the person working the counter has always been kind and patient, and there hasnt been much of a line in my experience.

One of our favorite bakeries! The pastries and sandwiches are always amazing. Also love that they serve local Sey coffee on drip and they carry boxes of beans for purchase!

Great croissant related pastries, but the coffee was lackluster. Other items are okay. FYI that there's no space to sit inside, but one little table outside.

There are thousands of pastry options in Brooklyn, all of which you can convince yourself are subtly different in some way, especially if they're hyped up and garnering lines down the block. Laurel somehow doesn't have that same hype but they're the real deal. Everything I've had here is the best of that thing I've ever had: the canelés, the speculoos rolls, the foccacia, the bostock. Every detail is thought through, down to the homemade butter. This place is about depth over breadth (and hype) and on top of that, Nico couldn't be kinder, for someone so clearly meticulous. It's a little out of the way, so I'm writing this review in the hope that it lasts!
