“The hype was gourmet, but the burger was cafeteria. 5 star marketing, 2 bite regret” - Tobias W

I was told it was walk-in only. I arrived at 630. There was one seat at the bar that the host told me it was reserved. The host said they could “get me in at 815.” I asked if it was “like a list” or “could possibly be sooner” the host repeated, like a robot, “I can get you in at 815”, so I assumed it was like reservation and took it. But was planning to look for something else and cancel it on the way back after I ate. I had a show I wanted to get to by 830ish so 815 was likely too close.

Amidst a frustrating experience at another restaurant, I get a text at 730 that my table was ready… Extremely frustrating as I really wanted to try this place and if the host had just told “it might be sooner” I might have just waited or gotten a snack to tide me over. Instead the host wanted to act like a robot. My night wasn’t totally ruined because the show was good, hence the second star.

Do not attempt to walk in. They will not hold tables for walk in’s. We were first in line before dinner service opened and we were not seated as everything was booked for reservations.

The restaurant does not take walk ins like the website says, groups at the front of line were turned down.

The cheeseburger is as good as advertised. Love the cosy neighborhood joint vibes. Agree with everyone saying best seats in the house are at the bar.

Incredible

It's gone way too viral - as everything does nowadays, but nothing can sell the quality of food short, especially the burger. It is simply one of the best, if not the best burger I've ever had in New York City.

We visited Red Hook Tavern for the first time on July 4th. Their famous burger was excellent, and my wife really enjoyed the kale salad. The bartender was friendly and made several thoughtful drink recommendations, which we appreciated.

Unfortunately, the overall experience was disappointing. We arrived at 4:40 p.m. for our 5:00 p.m. reservation and found a long line outside. There was no signage or staff directing guests, so it wasn’t clear whether the line was for walk-ins or for those with reservations.

Eventually, a staff member named Meghan came out with a host stand. When I asked, she told us we didn’t need to wait in the line since we had a reservation. However, when the restaurant opened at 5:00 p.m., Meghan informed us that we did need to get in line to check in—putting us at the very end of the reservation queue.

This was especially frustrating, as we had asked for clarification ahead of time and followed her instructions. A more organized check-in process and clearer communication would have made for a much better experience.

Absolutely delicious burger. We’ve been here multiple times and each time we only go for the same exact meals. These fries are DELICIOUS by the way.

A classic tavern that lives up to its storied reputation. Went with the classics, a wedge salad and burger split between two people. It was a great portion size and the food was phenomenal. The wedge dressing was elevated by the fresh dill, and the burger execution was top notch. They recommend medium rare for the burger - That doesn’t always go over well, but this Tavern knocks it out of the park. Also, we walked in and got street facing counter views. Loved it!

If you do not like your burger very rare and cold inside then this is the place to go.

Connor and Phil the GM accommodated us even we didn't had a booking and the kitchen was closed already, we came from England and they did a huge effort to serve us ( huge apologies and thanks to the kitchen team).
It was the best burger we ever had, so simple and yet so hard to get to this level of cooking , honestly one of the best beef meals we ever had, thanks again to all the team for making the effort to having us.
