We were excited to hit the wine trail and discover some of the many area wineries we did not visit on past trips. We saw the reviews on Shaw and wanted to check it out, especially as the reviews mentioned a nice mix of dry wines.
On arrival we did note it has a rustic feel to it. The gentleman who was working knew his stuff and was able to speak to Shaw, it heritage, second generation etc. However, our experience with the wines is not what others had mentioned. All of the samples we had ($15), tasted off to us. They didn't smell right either. All I can caulk it up to is that the wine was bad? Like bottles that were open too long, noting it is the start of the off-/..,Kseason. The colors of the whites had more of an orangish tinge. The reds, more of a brownish hue.
We were not impressed and left disappointed. We see lots of great reviews, so hopefully this was a one off, as we certainly try to promote those small businesses that do it right. For us this was not the case. We also did not see a restroom, unless it is behind the curtain.
The highlight was the painting by the owners son (now a partner) from when he was a child. Was going to make it onto a bottle of wine as a label. Cool story.
Shaw is a hidden gem of the Finger Lakes Region. The wines are absolutely exceptional and probably some of the biggest, full bodied, red wines in the state. The tasting is personalized with ample opportunity to ask questions about the grapes, the farming practices, and the wine making styles. What makes Shaw stand out from other wineries is that the wines you're given to taste are older, with a fair bit of bottle aging already done. This gives them a deepness and complexity not often found in this price point (FLX or elsewhere).
If you are looking for a stop on Seneca to drink wine quickly, with stunning aesthetics, and a place to party at, this is not the place for you. However if you want a taste of just how exceptional wines from this region can be, this has to be on your itinerary.
Great wine. Probably the best domestic Pinot Noir I’ve tasted outside of Oregon and California. Very transactional interaction with the owner/staff. You can get the same experience and cheaper wine at random liquor store, however.
So if you’re racing up or down Hwy 14, you might pass by Shaw Vineyard. Don’t! Although the look of the property is “rustic” the wines are excellent. We were referred to Shaw Winery by another winery up the road, in response to our inquiry about where in the Finger Lakes we might find fuller-bodied reds. Vigneron Steve Shaw (who dropped in during our tasting) has developed both whites and reds that were better than most we encountered this week. Our six-wine tasting resulted in our purchase of the Sauvignon Blanc (my wife’s favorite), the Cabernet Franc, and the 2017 Keuka Hill Reserve (a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and a bit of Merlot, bottled in June.) If only our budget had allowed for more!
Best reds in the Finger Lakes. Incredible depth and body for cool climate reds. Steve Shaw’s patience for perfection is impressive. Don’t sleep on this place, it’s a rare gem in the region.
Incredible, finest Fingerlakes wines!
Some of my favorite wines on the finger lakes. Great flavors, drier wines. Tasting room is small and basic but so worth it and knowledgeable staff.
Amazing wines. I'm from Northern California and know a little bit about wine. These were by far the best we've ever had in the region. The Cabernet Sauvignon and cab fran were both amazing. I highly recommend if you like good wine that's not overly sweet and well produced!
First time at Shaw Vineyard and it did not disappoint! Dry is Steve’s specialty and the tasting was perfect. Small vineyard and just wine. Bob had a selection of wines and it was a difficult decision to choose. Steve also dropped in and a great guy!
Noticeably, a great deal of patience goes into grape selection and aging, and the result is bold wines with way more body than neighboring vineyards produce. The dry riesling really benefits from this deepening of flavor; the reds are easily the best I've had in the finger lakes--I was very surprised by the body of the two I sampled, which tasted more like something from california, and took home the cabarnet sauvignon. Gem of a winery in the finger lakes.

If you like dry wine, stop here for a tasting. With that said, this place only seemed to be set up for tastings. They explained each wine well. The wines by the bottle are pricey, but finding a nice dry red is great!
Great high quality wines. We did a tasting with one of the owners and you could tell they knew what they were doing and the wines tasted great. A mist revisit if you're in the area.
We stopped in and loved every moment! Our tasting with Al was fantastic. This is a great stop for any and everyone in this region.
Shaw Vineyard's is warm, cozy, inviting and are they ever ready to have you taste some spectacular wines. Their reds are superb. The Cab Franc is particularly good for myself. First visit here, and to the Finger Lakes area. Met the staff and they were all very knowledgable and friendly. One of them gave us a recommendation to visit another local business which we did, and we could not have had a better time. Thank you for the entire experience! Y'all were awesome. We will return again!
Terrific wine! Among our favorite in the region. No sales pressure, they let the wines speak for themselves. We had a great time here and will definitely be back.
