I was in the area for a work meeting and randomly met an Indonesian gentleman on the subway, and he highly recommended this place. I have eaten a lot of Indonesian food in the Netherlands and somewhat know my way around the cuisine - NL has the largest Indonesian community outside of Indonesia; the country used to be a Dutch colony. This place hit the spot better than most of the places I remember from there. After the meeting I suggested to three other people that we all go have lunch at Awang. They had never tried Indonesian food and were blown away. The food was great, the service was great, the staff was super friendly. I notice that two Karens left nasty reviews complaining of some discrimination. Most of the tables, when we got to the restaurant were Indonesian patrons. Not once did my group - none of us were Indonesian - feel that we were not getting service because we were not Indonesian. Maybe we were not giving out Karen-Vibes? Maybe because we seriously looked happy to be there? Maybe we broke the ice by knowing something about Indonesia and the cuisine? I was there two weeks ago and I am going back there this weekend.

Awang Kitchen really cures your longing for Indonesia. I have tried various types of food, all of which are surprisingly close to home taste, so very grateful that there is this restaurant which really cooks from the heart. Listen, the gudeg is the star of the show, can't wait to try. The Mendo tempe is also really delicious! The owner is also super kind and friendly. Well done. Keep up the good work!Kid-friendliness: The place is spacious and safe for children

We visited Awang this week for lunch. Our waiter was terrific and he translated all the specials for us. I had the crispy fried duck, my partner had a whole fried pompano fish. Both dishes were amazing. The waiter explained that the duck usually comes with the spicy green sambal, but I asked to try a different one. The pompano came with a spicy sauce on the side, so I had that one too.The big news is they have Ricetafal (spelling) Mon-Fri 12-6pm. We’ll definitely have this next time because it gives you the opportunity to try a small amount of a few different dishes!
