Lhasa Liang Fen is a hidden gem in Elmhurst, serving traditional Tibetan dishes. The restaurant is small but clean, with a cozy atmosphere and ethnic decor. The staff is kind and helpful, ensuring dietary restrictions are accommodated for vegan customers. The butter tea is rich, and the liangfen is cool and spicy with a perfect kick. The veggie udon dish and spicy tofu are highly recommended, while the sweet tea and Tibetan tea also receive praise. The momos, both meat and veggie, are tasty and reminiscent of Tibetan and Bhutanese cuisine. The Lhasa Liang Fen dish, a jelly-like vegetarian cold dish, is a must-try. The Stir Fried Thenthuk with chicken and the Sha Bakleb, a giant fried dumpling, are unique and flavorful choices. The liangfen is served with a super yummy chili sauce that adds just the right spicy kick, and the chewy texture makes it very good. The blood sausage, or gyuma, has a grainy, pillowy texture due to toasted rice flour and is served in a light, chili-infused sauce that pleasantly lights up the palate. The momos come with jhol sauce, fragrant with sesame, garlic, ginger, and chilies, spicy but balanced. The restaurant's atmosphere is simple and unpretentious, with a TV playing music videos and commercials, creating an interesting vibe. The service is friendly and accommodating, even allowing restroom use without an order. Despite some minor inconveniences, the food quality and variety make this restaurant a worthwhile visit, especially for those craving authentic Tibetan and Nepali flavors. It is just a few doors down from Elmhurst Hospital and offers a unique dining experience for anyone interested in traditional dishes like momos, liangfen, and gyuma.
