About North Star Dining Room

North Star Dining Room, formerly known as Appel, has undergone changes that have transformed the dining experience for students. The food options remain largely unchanged, with popular items such as the morning omelette still available. However, the atmosphere and overall experience have been criticized by some as less appealing compared to the previous setup.

Bright white lights, walls, and floors have replaced the quaint and comfortable atmosphere of the past, making it feel less inviting and less like home. The removal of the allergen-safe preparation area has been noted, as well as the addition of new amenities such as the "Bowl" station, which has been described as similar to Chipotle but with fewer options.

The seating options have been expanded, resulting in a more cramped dining experience. While the staff are still described as kind, the loss of the comfortable and familiar atmosphere has led some to feel that the dining hall no longer feels like home.

The food quality has been described as salty, with one reviewer comparing the experience to eating a block of salt for an hour. Despite these criticisms, the staff are still kind and the food is still considered good, but the overall experience has been negatively impacted by the changes made during the renovation.

Too crowded. Plus they dont have a Kosher / halal section

A decent variety of dishes that changes from meal to meal and day to day. You can see specific offerings online, but they always have pizza, a salad bar, chicken (usually grilled breast), and baked goods + ice cream for dessert. The appearance of Mexican and East Asian is common, but not garunteed. Highly recommend if you are looking for clean protein (chicken breast) or some crispy, greasy, sheet-stle pizza. Not for those seeking an exciting or particularly seasoned experience.
