Staff is stuffy.
Bar has limited options.
Food selection is minimal and food itself is banal.
They never answer their phone.
Owner's smug responses to bad reviews mock the reviewers instead of addressing the shortcomings of the bar.

My girlfriend and I went up to Columbia County for a weekend away and decided to stop in at Canoe Hill on the way up for some Happy Hour drinks and bites after finding the place by chance just looking at the map for dining options. We came for the $2 happy hour oysters and stayed for the service and atmosphere. The oysters are chef’s choice, so we recommend ordering in small quantities so you can continuously try different types (we ordered 4, then 6, then 4, and got three different types of oysters). We had a couple of delicious drinks and a very tasty bar grilled cheese, and had great service from Valerie (also my girlfriend’s name!) who took care of us the whole time. The place was also virtually empty, which makes it a great spot for some alone time with a loved one. It’s not the cheapest place, but with the price comes an incredibly high quality experience. Highly recommend!

The food was good, not anything outstanding. Our experience was negatively impacted by the extremely loud music in the bar area where we were seated (I found this issue raised in other reviews here on Trip), which made conversation impossible. There was only us and the bar tender. When I politely asked her if the volume could be lowered, she told us curtly that the restaurant policy was to keep the music at that level, with no attempt to actually solve the problem for her customer e.g. the obvious solution of offering to relocate us in the restaurant. Eventually, at our request, we moved outside, which meant at least we could have a conversation. Note: The other servers were perfectly pleasant. However following my sharing this experience on another platform (a large search engine), we were surprised to receive a message from someone affiliated with the restaurant, but to my wife's phone. I wrote the review on my own behalf expressing displeasure about our feedback and accusing us of “public shaming” of the staff (we did no such thing as can be seen) and also inaccurately stating they had proactively turned down the music and moved us, which was not the case. Then it was trying to make us feel bad because the restaurant industry is struggling. Based on our experience and observing how the restaurant responds to other negative reviews here, there seems to be a pattern of defensiveness rather than openness to constructive feedback. Good restaurants typically listen and adjust based on customer input. Unfortunately, this was not our experience at Canoe Hill. There are other excellent dining options in the area. I'd also be cautious about their unauthorized use of the information from the reservation platform, they obviously triangulated the review with reservations and use my wife's details to to express their displeasure at my review.
Trying-quite-hard restaurant. Food was good. We were sat in the bar area, around 7pm, just us and the bar tender, couldn’t hear my wife speaking with the volume of the music “can you please turn it down a bit?”…receives a pretty curt ”we have a policy to keep it at that level”…not a “maybe we could seat you elsewhere?” or attempt to solve the issue for the client …better to stick with the policy as opposed to anything customer centric I suppose! When WE asked to go outside it was better, at least we could hear ourselves talking. But hey: Stick with the formula!

Upon entering its very cute and quaint, but a little dark. We were excited to try this hidden little spot, but the food quality and service did not meet up to the hype. Small menu which is fine but the options should be amazing. Not the case, the chicken was bland and boring for a dinner option. Same with the pork and polenta. I really wanted to like the polenta as it's one of my fav dishes, but tasteless. The service matched the food quality. Not worth the price for a dinning experience.

Cute restaurant with very interesting dishes. The pork on polenta was my favorite because the meat was tender and very flavorful, and the polenta was creamy. The clam dip was fine, but I couldn't taste the clams. The staff was super friendly, and the space was tight and loud, but also cozy.

Best food in Hudson valley! Very cute place, super friendly bartender, extended cocktails and really good mocktail (important for non drinkers). We tried beet salad (amazing), whole branzino (most amazing branzino ever), half chicken (also amazing). Can’t wait to come back to try other things on the menu!

We have loved Canoe Hill ever since they graced this small town. What a lovely, cozy, well thought out atmosphere. Very solid food and cocktails. Sam at the bar is such a pleasure and other waitstaff (like Abby, who recently left) just made the experience all you might want it to be. It's cozy, unpretentious, quality in multiple food and drink aspects, and a place we hope stays for a VERY long time.

Canoe Hill’s menu has everything you crave and the food is executed with mastery. It’s our own Brooklyn vibe in Dutchess County. The oyster selection is educational (and delicious) the cocktails perfect and the cheeseburger just the right size and cooked perfectly medium rare. For the “critic” who wanted a well-done burger - go to the diner around the corner - Canoe Hill doesn’t want to ruin their delicious meat cooked well done.
And FYI - all the NYC visitors who believe the hype around Stissing House - this is a far better dining experience.

Horrible food.Overpriced! Charged 2$ for three small crostini for they did not serve enough with appetizer.
Felt sick after the Shepard pie.
Raw cold Brussels sprouts.
Deceiving advertising for the oysters limiting their lower price to bar area only which was unavailable.
Service slow and inattentive. A bar drink took 20 minutes to be served.
Used to be a good place. Would never go back there again.
