This is a vintage-style café ☕️ tucked away underground in New York’s West Village. If you walk by without paying attention to the small sign, you might miss it.
The words “food for the soul” at the entrance caught my attention. I wondered if this place might have something that really fits my taste.
The name “Ad Hoc” is also interesting. In the IT world, it usually means something temporary, but here it feels more like something that belongs to the present moment. I can imagine the space changing over time, which gives it a relaxed and flexible feeling.
When I walked in, I saw four staff members 👨👨👩👩 working. The space felt like a private study or reading room, filled with sofas 🛋️, old tables and chairs, books 📚, magazines, and newspapers 📰. The atmosphere was warm and comfortable.
The coffee beans they were using today were called Eclipse, from a well-known brand called Onyx Coffee Lab. The flavor notes were baker’s chocolate 🍫, burnt sugar, and smoked vanilla bean.
I ordered a hot oat milk latte because I wanted to see what kind of latte art they would make. It came in a thick white ceramic cup, and the top had a neat leaf-shaped pattern. I believe the powder on top was a mix of cocoa and chocolate, because I could really taste the rich chocolate flavor and smell the cocoa. The sweetness was just right. The drink cost $7.62 with tax, and I think it was well worth it.
Horrible matcha latte. Tastes like milk with a drop of grass. No flavor whatsoever. Ordered a Macadamia nut matcha latte for eight dollars. Took two sips and threw out. Not the most friendly staff. I said use the milk you recommend- they couldn’t provide an answer. Cute spot and I’m sure the coffee is good but don’t come here for matcha
Fantastic coffee!! The barista made me a delicious dark roast cortado and the espresso was dialed in perfectly! He was also very knowledgeable about the history
of coffee and shared some interesting facts with me. He recommended the burrata and apricot plate to my boyfriend, it was divine! Such a charming cafe. Thank you, Kamryn!
Absolute gem
Amazing 💕❤️
Great vibes, no public WiFi and no laptop during weekend just FYI
Cool spot to check out. Not sure about quality of pastries or food though (I didn’t order anything after seeing the pastry options so I can’t really speak for it)…coffee was good.
best hot chocolate of my life. Thanks Cameron
We've been coming here pre-pandemic, and they've changed their seating, drink menu, etc. I like that there is more space to walk around, but I do miss the coziness of the old seating. I also miss the rose latte they used to have. The drinks are more stream-lined now and I feel like what I used to go to the village for (unique drinks and a quaint coffee place to catch up) has now turned into someplace I can find close to home in HK. Regardless, AdHoc is still charming and the staff is still just as lovely and I love breaking out of the normal routine to catch up with friends here every now-and-then. It has a small little staircase to come down, so unless you're a local, you'll probably miss it, but local or not, definitely check it out!
So cozy, and great hot chocolate

Found this lovely cafe while visiting, had a flat white, girlfriend got a latte and the scrambled egg sandwich, everything was amazing, love the atmosphere, if I lived in New York I'd come back every day to do some light reading while drinking a coffee.
Cozy space but their coffee sucks. $4.90 for a tiny Americano, get real.
Cute, cozy, friendly, and yummy ☕️
Very nice space but servers are a bit loud / profane (sometimes shouting), makes it hard to relax with a cup of coffee
Matcha was MID. I’ve tried out different matcha across the city and this gotta be the worst matcha I’ve ever had. And it’s freaking $10!!
They claimed it to be “ceremonial grade” but it’s nothing close to that level. It’s very watery, also legit tastes like water (the ceremonial grade usually tastes more bitter and has thicker consistency), and just don’t have a good ratio between milk and matcha. I really am disappointed.
